Corey Clement’s Story: An Undrafted Free Agent, a Super Bowl Champion

Corey Joel Clement, a professional football running back, was born on November 2, 1994. His passion for football emerged during his high school years in Glassboro, New Jersey, at Glassboro High School. Across his student career, Clement became a force to be reckoned with on the football field, accumulating 6,245 rushing yards, 34 rushing touchdowns, and an impressive 90 total touchdowns for the Bulldogs. His prowess on the track field was also notable; as a senior, he clocked 11.76 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Rivals.com recognized his talents and potential, ranking him a four-star recruit and the 17th best running back in his class. Although he initially committed to the University of Pittsburgh for college football, he ultimately decided on the University of Wisconsin.

2013 marked the beginning of Clement’s collegiate football career at the University of Wisconsin. That year he played in 12 games and rushed for 547 yards on 67 carries alongside seven touchdowns, despite acting as a backup to renowned players James White and Melvin Gordon for the season. The 2015 season brought new challenges when Clement injured his groin right before the first game. Nevertheless, he managed to rush for 221 yards and achieve five rushing touchdowns in a mere four games of the season.

Clement’s college career peaked in 2016 when he registered 1,375 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns, 12 receptions, and 132 receiving yards. Recognizing his exceptional performance, the coaches awarded him first-team all-Big Ten honors, while the media granted him a second-team all-Big Ten honor.

After an extraordinary collegiate career, Clement took his first steps towards professional football by signing with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent on May 11, 2017. His first NFL touchdown delivered a captivating performance against the New York Giants on September 24, 2017. Clement’s rookie season with the Eagles was marked by individual accomplishments. However, the most noteworthy achievement was the victory in the Super Bowl LII.

The following season, Clement returned to a very crowded backfield and suffered a knee injury in week 14 which led to being placed on injured reserve on December 11, 2018. Clement mostly worked on special teams in the first four games of the 2019 season before being placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. Despite these setbacks, he was offered a one-year deal for his resiliency and was re-signed with the Eagles for another season in 2020.

In the following years, Clement signed with the New York Giants, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Baltimore Ravens before finally landing a spot on the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad in 2022. Despite being part of the practice squad, Clement exemplified his skillset as he temporarily filled in as a starter running back for an injured James Conner. Clement’s dedication, tenacity, and ability were recognized with a one-year contract extension on March 14, 2023. His journey from an undrafted free agent to a professional football running back serves as a testament to his ambition, and his story continues to develop as he keeps pushing himself beyond limits and remains passionate about the sport.
