Cameron Jordan's Biography

Cameron Tyler Jordan, an American professional football defensive end, was born on July 10, 1989. He has proudly carried out his honors for the New Orleans Saints in the National Football League (NFL). Gaining experience and knowledge in his college days, Cameron excelled at the prestigious California Golden Bears. His talent didn’t go unnoticed and he was drafted in 2011 by the Saints during the first round of the NFL.

At the peak of his career, Cameron was a part of the renowned NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. Further speckling his career were numerous titles such as eight-time Pro Bowler, three-time All-Pro selection, and earning a place as the Saints’ all-time franchise sack leader. He was raised in Chandler, Arizona and had the privilege of being the son of Steve Jordan, who played tight end for the Minnesota Vikings.

Cameron’s humble beginnings started at Chandler High School, where he excelled in football and track for the Chandler Wolves. Throughout his footballing journey, he received All-State honors in his senior year after recording 85 tackles and 17.5 quarterback sacks. His excellent performance did not go unnoticed by Rivals.com, ranking him as the #37 strongside defensive end of the class of 2007.

Rivaling his football talent was his impressive track & field skills. Cameron stood tall as one of Arizona’s top performers in the discus throw. He won the state discus title at the 2007 5A I State Meet, recording a top-throw of 53.54 meters. He also placed tenth in the shot put event.

Cameron’s football career sky-rocketed when he joined the University of California at Berkeley, where he played primarily as a defensive end. He played under head coach Jeff Tedford and defensive coordinator Bob Gregory. During his tenure at California, which spanned from 2007 to 2010, he participated in 50 of 51 possible games and made 32 starts. Cameron also earned honors such as All-American (Pro Football Weekly) and first-team All-Pac-10 Conference choice in 2010.

Cameron ended his college football chapter with a record of 175 tackles, 34.0 tackles for loss (-122 yards), and 16.5 sacks (-89 yards). He remarkably positioned himself just outside of the school’s all-time top ten in the latter two categories.

Cameron’s talents soon matched the stages of the 2011 Senior Bowl. Even though his team lost 24–10 to the South, his stellar performances elevated his draft stock, virtually guaranteeing him as a first-round pick in the upcoming draft. His performances left quite the impression on Mel Kiper Jr., who was left in awe of Cameron’s incredible performances.

Cameron attended the NFL Scouting Combine where he performed well. During the pre-draft process, many NFL draft experts and scouts projected Cameron as a first-round pick. He was ranked as the second-best defensive end prospect in the draft by DraftScout.com and Sports Illustrated, and third-best by NFL analysts Gil Brandt and Brian Billick.

Cameron’s career became official when he was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the first round (24th overall) of the 2011 NFL draft. Starting his career with the Saints, he competently filled the shoes of the veteran free agent Turk McBride. Transitioning into his professional football career, Cameron made his mark in the season opener against the Green Bay Packers, making three combined tackles in their 42–34 loss. This game marked his introduction and welcome into the regular season.

Cameron’s first career sack came on January 1, 2012, in the Saints’ win against the Carolina Panthers in Week 17. Although he was penalized for a horse-collar tackle, Cameron still managed to finish his rookie season in 2011 with 31 combined tackles, four pass deflections, and a sack in 16 games and 15 starts.

The Saints achieved a 13–3 record and won a playoff berth under coach Sean Payton, making them leaders in the NFC South. After their encouraging performance against the Detroit Lions in the Wild Card Round, the team unfortunately lost in the Divisional Round at the San Francisco 49ers but not without an impressive six solo tackles and a pass deflection by Cameron.

As his career progressed, Cameron continued to climb the ladder of success. He played as a starter in all 16 games of the 2013 season, garnering 47 combined tackles. He was also rewarded with his first Pro Bowl selection in 2013. Due to his excellent performance on the field, Cameron was placed 99th by his peers on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2014.

Despite facing some minor setbacks, Cameron has continued to deliver stellar performances and consistently improving his game. This consistency led to Cameron being offered a five-year contract by the Saints for $55 million, with $33.46 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $15 million in 2015.
