In high school, his extraordinary ability became even more apparent. As a student at Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona, Purdy asserted himself as the top producing quarterback in the history of the state, setting records in passing yards with 4,405 and touchdowns with a total of 57. Such outstanding performance caught the attention of college scouts, leading him to receive many attractive offers from numerous universities.
Ultimately, Brock Purdy opted to attend Iowa State University, spurning offers from Alabama and Texas A&M. He began his collegiate career on the bench, but after a few games into his freshman year, he was given the opportunity to start and performed astonishingly well.
In his first season, Purdy led the Cyclones to an 8-1 record, displaying a unique combination of passing accuracy, strong arm strength, and uncanny ability to improvise and create plays when everything seemed to break down. His remarkable performance earned him the Offensive Freshman of the Year award in the Big 12 Conference in 2018.
His sophomore year was equally impressive, as he was named the Cyclones’ permanent starter. Purdy broke even more records, setting new highs for passing yards, completions, and touchdown passes in a single season at Iowa State. His robust performance in the 2019 season further solidified his status as one of the most outstanding quarterbacks in college football.
Despite facing numerous challenges due to the pandemic in his junior year that affected the length and consistency of the season, Purdy still managed to lead the Cyclones to the Big 12 Championship Game while earning a third consecutive bowl game invitation, a milestone in the history of Iowa State football.
Off the field, Purdy is well-known for his community involvement. He has been involved with volunteering work at local hospitals and schools in the Ames community in Iowa. Being of strong faith, he also dedicates time serving at Cornerstone Church in Ames.
In the summer of 2020, amidst the social unrest spreading across the nation, Purdy used his platform as a prominent collegiate athlete to call for unity and understanding, demonstrating his leadership beyond the football field.
Standing at 6’1″ and weighing 212 pounds, Purdy combines football intelligence, leadership and athletic ability to make him one of the forthcoming promising figures in football. He is determined and prepared to go into the professional league, but for now, continues to inspire and exemplify sportsmanship at Iowa State.
