Andrew Dowell, born on November 16, 1996, started his journey to become a professional football player in America, dedicated to earning his place as a free agent in the highly competitive sports industry. His tenacity and sheer determination saw him rise through the ranks, playing the coveted position of linebacker with deftness and aplomb. Dowell’s passion for football was ignited at St. Edward High School, where he began to shape his raw talent into concrete skills. As a junior, he proved his mettle as a running back, making 158 carries for 968 yards. His impressive performances also included netting 13 rushing touchdowns, 17 receptions for 246 yards, and 3 receiving touchdowns. His high school football journey culminated in a senior year where he switched positions to safety, paving the way for his team to win the 2014 Division I state championship. He accomplished this feat through an impressive record of 153 tackles, six interceptions, eleven passes defensed, 47 carries for 241 yards, six rushing touchdowns, 10 receptions for 148 yards, and three receiving touchdowns. Dowell’s efforts were recognized with All-Ohio and Cleveland.com All-Star honors.

Dowell’s prowess extended beyond football; he also demonstrated aptitude in diverse athletic fields including basketball and track. However, his heart remained deeply rooted in football. After high school, he accepted a football scholarship from Michigan State University (MSU).

Beginning as a true freshman, Dowell played 13 games, predominantly on special teams, securing his place as the leader with 10 tackles. His sophomore year saw him evolve into a regular starting eight-of-12 games as a linebacker, making 67 tackles. As a junior, he started all 13 games and improved further with 74 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, 4 passes defensed, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. His senior year was even more successful, with a start in all 13 games, making 97 tackles that ranked him 10th in the Big Ten Conference. His tenure at Michigan State was even more special as he got to play alongside his twin brother, David. He also earned Honourable-Mention All-Big Ten honors by coaches and media, and received the MSU Tommy Love Award for most improved player on defense.

Upon graduation, Dowell was signed as an undrafted free agent by Dallas Cowboys in May 2019. His career however was marred by unfortunate injuries that led to his waiver not only by Dallas but from the injured reserve as well on two different instances in August 2019.

His journey took a significant turn when he signed to the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad on November 20, 2019. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Saints, showcasing his potential and enduring through roster cuts. Dowell made it to the active roster for the 17th week’s game against the Carolina Panthers in January 2021.

In 2021, finalizing a successful training camp, Dowell made the New Orleans Saints’ 53-man roster. Notably, in a match with the New England Patriots, he executed a commendable punt block against their punter, Jake Bailey. By the end of 2021, he became the first NFL player to record five special teams stops in a single game. Dowell concluded the 2021 season with 16 games played and 15 special teams tackles, placing him fourth in the league.

Despite delivering consistent performances, accruing two forced fumbles and seven combined tackles, Dowell didn’t receive a qualifying offer for the next season, becoming a free agent on March 15, 2023. However, shortly after, he re-signed with the Saints.

In another unexpected twist, Dowell was placed on the injured reserve after suffering a torn ACL during practice. He made yet another recovery and re-signed with the Saints on August 23, 2024, only to be released again four days later.
