A.J. Green's Biography

Adriel Jeremiah “A.J.” Green, born on July 31, 1988, is now a retired professional football player from the United States. He was primarily known for his wide receiver position in the National Football League (NFL), where he played for twelve seasons, the majority of which were with the Cincinnati Bengals. He also had a stint with the Arizona Cardinals.

Born in South Carolina, Green was never a stranger to adversity. When he was just four years old, he tragically lost his older brother in a car accident. Despite the tragedy, Green found solace in athletics at a young age, demonstrating a natural aptitude for football. He attended Summerville High School, where he competed in multiple sports, including football, basketball, and track. He was recognized as a standout football prospect in the Class of 2008, earning the honor of being ranked #1 by Sports Illustrated. Green’s early achievements set the stage for his future in professional football.

In college, he played for the University of Georgia’s Bulldogs, where he earned first-team All-American honors for his exceptional performance. His talent didn’t go unnoticed and Green was chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals as the 4th overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft. It marked the start of an illustrious decade-long career with the Bengals.

In his inaugural season with the Bengals, he quickly made a name for himself by making the 2012 Pro Bowl. This achievement made him the first rookie receiver to reach this milestone in eight years. Throughout his career, he accumulated a total of seven Pro Bowl appearances.

Between 2011 and 2013, Green set the record as the player with the most passes caught (260) in their first three seasons in NFL history. This feat was subsequently broken by Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. Green proved himself to be an exceptional athlete by achieving six seasons with 1,000 or more receiving yards.

However, after spending several seasons with the Bengals, he made the decision to move to the Arizona Cardinals in 2021. When he left his former team, he ranked second in franchise history regarding receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, and receptions. His fantastic career with the Bengals was capped off when he signed a one-day deal with them in 2023, officially retiring as a member of the Cincinnati organization.

Green’s journey into the world of football can be traced back to his time in school where he applied his astonishing hand-eye coordination to juggling in his elementary years, something he said helped him with his skills on the field.

At Summerville High School, Green was recognized as one of the top national football prospects in his class and was featured in Sports Illustrated. His performance in high school laid a solid foundation for his future in football, earning him a spot at the University of Georgia and eventually drafted into the NFL.

During his time in college, Green had many remarkable performances. In his freshman season, he set multiple school records at Georgia for a freshman and led the SEC in receiving yards. He was named second-team All-SEC and Freshman of the Year by SEC coaches, and was named to the Associated Press All-SEC first-team. He finished his three-year career at Georgia with 166 receptions for 2,619 yards and 23 touchdowns.

In the 2011 NFL Draft, Green was the 4th overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals, becoming the highest drafted wide receiver in Georgia school history. His first NFL reception was a 41-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Bruce Gradkowski against the Cleveland Browns in the Bengals’ 2011 regular season opener, a 27–17 victory.

By the end of his rookie season, he had become the leading rookie in terms of receptions and receiving yards, and during his time with the Bengals, broke multiple franchise records. In 2023, he signed a one-day deal with the Bengals, officially retiring from the sport.

Having risen above personal tragedies and hurdles, A.J. Green will be remembered as a symbol of triumph and perseverance in the NFL, setting multiple records and being an invaluable asset to all the teams he played for.
