Zion Williamson

Zion Lateef Williamson, an American professional basketball player, was born on July 6, 2000 in Salisbury, North Carolina. Williamson’s path towards professional basketball began to take definitive shape during his high school years, when his unique set of skills and talent began to garner him national attention. Williamson’s professional journey culminated when he was selected by the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2019 NBA Draft, playing on their team as a power forward.

Raised in Salisbury, North Carolina, Zion Williamson was born to Lateef Williamson and Sharonda Sampson. His father, who was a High School All-American in 1993, had a stint as a football player while his mother became a middle school health and physical education teacher. Williamson’s name was inspired by the biblical location Mount Zion near Jerusalem. He was just two years old when his family moved to Florence, South Carolina after his maternal grandmother’s death, and like many modern families, his parents decided to divorce when he was five years old.

Zion discovered his passion for sports at an early age, with soccer and a quarterback position in football being his first loves. However, everything changed when he turned five and set his sights on becoming a college basketball star. With a determined spirit, Zion started waking up at 5 a.m. to train when he was just nine years old. His determination saw him compete in youth leagues with his mother coaching and play for the Sumter Falcons on the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) circuit where he faced opponents four years older than him.

Williamson’s basketball career began at Johnakin Middle School in Marion, where he joined the school’s basketball team. His mother continued her role as his coach, and under her tutelage, he averaged 20 points per game. By the time he started his high school education, his highlight was leading Johnakin Middle School to an 8–1 record and a conference title.

As the years passed, his dedication to basketball did not waver. Instead, he attended Spartanburg Day School where he played for the Griffins and honed his skills. His basketball ability quickly caught the attention of scouts, and he became a consensus five-star recruit, ranked among the top five players in the 2018 class. His slam dunk prowess earned him even more attention.

During his freshman year on the Duke Blue Devils, he was named ACC Player of the Year, ACC Athlete of the Year and ACC Rookie of the Year demonstrating his skillful play and relentless attitude towards competition. His single-game school scoring record for freshmen set in January 2019 and five times earning ACC Rookie of the Week accolades were testaments to his exemplary performance.

As his basketball journey continued to unfold, Zion Williamson was picked first overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Pelicans. Since then, he has continued to make strides in his career and make his mark as a powerful force in the basketball world. Williamson was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2020, and in 2021, he achieved the significant milestone of being the fourth youngest NBA player to be selected to an All-Star game.
