Daniel Theis

Daniel Theis, born 4 April 1992 in Salzgitter, Germany, first touched a basketball as part of the Braunschweig youth system and over the years, his affinity for the sport paved the way to a prestigious career in basketball, as both a valuable player in the NBA and a member of Germany’s national team. Before reaching the NBA, Theis traversed a career steeped in triumph and ardor in his home country’s premier Basketball Bundesliga for seven seasons. Born with an unmatched propensity to achieve greatness, he was a four-time All Star and three-time champion in the Bundesliga.

Theis made an impressive debut in the Bundesliga in the 2010-11 season and his talent bloomed as he gained valuable playing experience primarily with Braunschweig’s development squad. Between 2010 to 2012, he played alongside his older brother Frank, further honing his skills and learning the subtleties of the game. Recognizing his undeniable talent and monumental improvement, in 2011, the Eurobasket.com website named him the All-2.Pro B Most Improved Player of the Year. In Braunschweig, his illustrious teammates included future NBA player Dennis Schröder.

In the 2013-14 season, while playing for Ratiopharm Ulm, Theis was awarded the BBL Best Young Player award. After his breakthrough season, Theis relocated to the Brose Bamberg team, another German Bundesliga club. In the 2014 off-season, the Washington Wizards invited him to play in the NBA Summer League. Later, in the 2014-15 season, Theis bagged his first German League championship with Brose Baskets after defeating FC Bayern Munich in the German League Finals. His success continued, winning two more championships in 2016 and 2017 with Bamberg.

On 20 July 2017, Theis left Germany to begin an illustrious career in the NBA with the Boston Celtics. He faced adversities, such as a torn meniscus in March 2018 and a tear of the plantar fascia in October 2018. Despite the odds, Theis remained resilient, making a commendable comeback. He established himself as a reliable player on the league, starting 64 games at center for the Celtics during the 2019-20 season, even achieving a personal career-high on 21 February 2020, with 25 points and 16 rebounds in a match against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Theis was transferred frequently within the NBA. A trade in March 2021 sent him to the Chicago Bulls, followed by trades to the Houston Rockets, and back to the Celtics in February 2022. Despite the tumultuous shifts, Theis’ stints, particularly with the Celtics, were marked with notable achievements, such as reaching the NBA finals.

As part of a grand trade in July 2022, Theis joined the Indiana Pacers. Following a knee surgery, he made an outstanding career comeback against the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2023. However, a lack of playing action with the Pacers led him to reach a buyout agreement with the team in November 2023. Shortly after, he joined the Los Angeles Clippers.

Parallel to his club journey, Theis has also made crucial contributions to Germany’s national basketball team. He represented the country at the FIBA World Cup in 2019, the EuroBasket 2017 and 2022, bagging a bronze honor in the latter. His pivotal role led Germany to their first world title at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
