Ty Jerome

Ty Jerome, born on July 8, 1997, in New York City, is an American professional basketball player now gracing the court for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). From his schoolboy days of hoops precocity at Iona Preparatory School, New Rochelle, New York, to proudly representing the University of Virginia as a collegiate star, and then making his mark in the professional sphere, Jerome has traced a trajectory of constant growth and achievement.

Raised in an athletically inclined family headed by parents Mark Jerome and Melanie Walker, Ty carries a lineage intertwining African-American roots and a fascinating history of Civil Rights activism. He understood the value of teamwork and sportsmanship from his two brothers and two sisters, actively participating in family games and bouts. His background was enriched further by his paternal grandparents’ involvement in the Civil Rights Movement, his grandfather even serving the cause as a photographer.

In Iona Preparatory School, Ty’s talent shone brighter than ever. Here, he enjoyed a successful four-year career with the varsity team. He capped his junior year with first-team All-Conference, All-Metropolitan, and All-State honors. Regrettably, a hip injury prematurely shortened his senior year. Despite this setback, he caught the attention of talent scouts from the University of Virginia, firmly committing to their program on September 2, 2014.

As a freshman, Ty functioned as a reliable backup point guard, delivering average stats of 4.3 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. Stepping up his game as a sophomore, he became the Cavaliers’ starting point guard, wowing fans with a career-best performance against Boston College, racking up 31 points. This outstanding season guaranteed him a place in the All-ACC Third Team.

Further accolades included a selection to the pre-season All-ACC Second Team before the 2018-2019 season and a nomination as one of the finalists for the prestigious Bob Cousy Award (for the nation’s top college point guard) on February 4, 2019. Ty’s awe-inspiring averages of 13.6 points and 5.5 assists per game contributed to Virginia’s securing a #1 seed in the 2019 NCAA tournament. Thanks to Ty’s brilliant showings, which included 16 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds in the Championship game, Virginia claimed the 2019 title with an 85–77 victory. Following this momentous win, Ty decided to forgo his final year of eligibility and enter the 2019 NBA draft.

The Philadelphia 76ers snapped him up as their 24th pick in the 2019 NBA draft. However, a series of trades saw him eventually land with the Phoenix Suns. Ty’s NBA debut came in a victorious effort against the Charlotte Hornets, where he contributed four points, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals in 12 minutes. After overcoming right ankle sprain, he ultimately became a key player for Phoenix.

In 2020, a trade led him to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Though a severe left ankle sprain limited his play, he returned to the court with the Thunder’s affiliate, Oklahoma City Blue in the NBA G League. Ty’s steadfastness paved the way for his Thunder debut and a career-high score of 23 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Unfortunately, a groin surgery prematurely ended his 2022 season.

Ty continued his journey with the Golden State Warriors, signing a two-way contract that led to his contribution to their affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors. 2023 saw him joining the Cleveland Cavaliers, the latest chapter in his professional hoops journey.

Ty’s key influences in basketball extend to his American Studies major at the University of Virginia and his childhood admiration for NBA legend Steve Nash. His path in professional basketball is a testament to his resilience, growth, and passion for the sport, promising an exciting future as he continues to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
