Fairfax Harrison, an accomplished American lawyer, financier, and railway executive was born on 13th March 1869, and lived a significant life up until 2nd February 1938. He is most noted for his extraordinary career in the rail business where he shaped the Southern Railway into a formidable force in the transport sector.

After gaining experience as a lawyer, Harrison embarked on his corporate journey with the Southern Railway Company in 1896. He quickly navigated his way through company ranks, showcasing his expertise in corporate law. Filled with ambition, he did not rest until he was named the Vice-President of Finance for Southern Railway around 1906.

Eventually, by 1913, Harrison ascended to the pinnacle of his railway career when he was unanimously elected as President of the Company. This was a significant milestone because the railway was bursting with potential, and it required a strategic leader to steer it forward. Throughout his presidency, Harrison spearheaded numerous initiatives that expanded the company’s influence across 13 states by developing an 8,000-mile (or approximately 13,000 kilometers) network.

Interestingly, his tenure witnessed a peculiar twist. Upon the United States’ entry into the World War I, the Government assumed control over railroads, roping them into the United States Railroad Administration. Always leading from the front, Harrison served credibly on the Administration board amidst turbulent times.

Business as usual returned after the War, and Harrison turned his attention to managing the Southern Railway’s reputation amongst the public. He also channeled efforts into enhancing their technical capacity. Under his watch, sleek locomotive engines replaced antiquated stock. Besides technology, he also led the drive to increase the company’s radius of operation, by funding the construction of more track and invigorating the areas serviced by the railway.

His leadership would be heavily tested during the Great Depression, which cast a dark cloud over many businesses. Southern Railway was not spared the adverse effects of the economic downturn. However, Harrison did not yield to pressure and rallied his company in the face of adversity. Consequently, by 1936, the railway was back on track and posting impressive profits.

Having served the railway industry for many years, Harrison’s journey came to an end with his retirement in 1937. His departure from service was brief as he passed away only three months later, leaving a lasting legacy that transcended the world of business and transportation.

On an unrelated note, another individual worth mentioning in this collective historical account is Ethel Reed. Born on the same day as Harrison, but in 1874, Reed became an internationally famous graphic artist. A photograph by Frances Benjamin Johnston, captured around 1895, immortalizes the talented artist. It currently preserves Reed’s image in the archive of the U.S. Library of Congress, restored by Adam Cuerden.
