Ben Simmons

Benjamin David Simmons, an Australian-born professional basketball player, has emerged as one of the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) most prominent athletes. Born on July 20, 1996, Simmons played college basketball for one season with the Louisiana State University (LSU) Tigers, during which he was named a consensus first-team All-American and the USBWA (U.S. Basketball Writers Association) National Freshman of the Year.

In the 2016 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers selected Simmons as the first overall pick. Due to a foot injury that required him to sit out a year, his professional playing career started in earnest in 2018, when he was named the NBA Rookie of the Year. During his tenure with the 76ers, Simmons was selected three times to participate in the NBA All-Star Game. However, disagreements with the 76ers management after the 2020–21 season led to him being traded to the Brooklyn Nets, making him the most-fined player in NBA history, considering total financial loss.

Simmons was born and raised in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, where he attended Box Hill Senior Secondary College. He then moved to the United States to attend Montverde Academy in Florida. In Melbourne, the LSU Tigers’ disappointing season did not dampen Simmons’ performance or his prospects. After leaving school, he entered the NBA draft, continuing the legacy begun by other Melbourne-born first overall picks like Andrew Bogut and Kyrie Irving.

Simmons’ parents—his American-born father, Dave, a professional basketball player, and Australian-born mother, Julie—had a significant influence on his early life and basketball career. Simmons’ father played for Oklahoma City University in the United States before turning professional in 1989 with the Melbourne Tigers, Australia’s National Basketball League team. His early training was supplemented by his five siblings Melissa, Emily, Liam, Sean, and Olivia. A dual citizen of Australia and the United States, Simmons has been privileged to represent Australia on the national team.

Simmons’ journey into the world of basketball began in Newcastle, at the Newcastle Hunters’ under-12 representative team, where he started as early as seven years old. He further honed his skills playing for Lake Macquarie and Newcastle. By the age of ten, he was back in Melbourne, playing junior basketball for the Knox Raiders.

Despite his keen interest in rugby and Australian rules football, basketball claimed the most significant portion of his sporting interest. His decision to focus on basketball came to fruition when he was awarded MVP in year 7 at Whitefriars College. As a teenager, he participated at the 2011 Australian Schools Championships, representing Box Hill Senior Secondary College, and later received a scholarship from the Australian Institute of Sport. His talents took him to the United States, where he featured at the renowned Pangos All-American Camp for basketball prospects, and by the age of 15, he represented Australia at the 2012 FIBA Under-17 World Championship.

In 2013, Simmons’ moved to the U.S. to compete against peers of similar skill levels at Montverde Academy in Florida. His standout performances at various competitions, such as the High School National Tournament and the Jordan Brand Classic International Game, drew national attention, and Simmons cemented his position as one of the best amateur players in the country.

On October 14, 2013, he committed to Louisiana State University to play college basketball, favouring LSU over other prominent basketball schools like Kentucky, Kansas, and Duke. His high school career ended with significant acclaim and several awards, including America’s top high school junior and MVP at the National Basketball Players’ Association Top 100 camp.

Simmons’ freshman year of college, though marked by high expectations, met with disappointment as LSU failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament. Despite that setback, Simmons posted impressive stats throughout the season and was named first-team All-Southeastern Conference and the league’s Freshman of the Year.

Following LSU’s disappointing season, Simmons withdrew from college and declared for the NBA draft. Despite his somewhat controversial decision to abandon his college career and focus on the draft, Simmons was selected as the first overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2016, becoming the third Melbourne native to achieve that distinction.

A foot injury sidelined Simmons for his first season; however, he returned stronger and was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2018. His time at the 76ers culminated with a trade to the Brooklyn Nets after the 2020–21 season, marking a new chapter in his professional career.
