Born on October 13, 2001, in Chesapeake, Virginia, Cameron “Cam” A. Thomas had an affinity for basketball from a tender age. His mother, Leslie Thomas, was a basketball player at Norfolk State and later Hampton University, so it’s fair to assume that her influence played a key role in encouraging Cam’s passion for the game. As he grew older, that spark only intensified, and she would actively push and guide him towards refining his basketball skills.

Local YMCA’s and neighborhood parks in Chesapeake served as Cam’s early proving grounds, where he began his basketball journey and honed his nascent skills. His parents quickly recognized his innate talent and sought to enroll him at Oscar Smith High School, a prominent school with a strong basketball program.

Thomas initially struggled with his academics in high school, but his participation in basketball helped turn things around. As his love for the game grew, so did his dedication towards keeping his academic scores up. He racked up impressive scores on the court, which led to his recruitment by Oak Hill Academy, a Virginia-based preparatory school known for producing NBA talents.

Cam spent two seasons at Oak Hill Academy, averaging 31.5 points per game in his senior year, an accomplishment that earned him the status of being the highest-scoring player in the school’s history. This feat is made even more impressive considering Oak Hill’s progressive legacy of producing NBA players, including Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, and Rajon Rondo.

Following a rewarding high school career, Cam was ranked a five-star recruit by many sports outlets. He received several offers from Division 1 colleges but ultimately chose to commit to Louisiana State University (LSU) in November 2019. This decision marked another major milestone in Cam’s career and a chance to further establish himself as a formidable guard.

As a freshman at LSU, Thomas lived up to his reputation as a scorer. He averaged 23 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 32.5% from the three-point range. His performance earned him a spot in the First Team All-SEC and was named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Associated Press.

The scoring phenomenon caught the eyes of NBA scouts as he led all Division 1 freshmen in points per game. Thomas proved himself to be a skillful offensive player, able to deliver under pressure and comfortable at taking – and making – big shots.

Despite only spending one season with the LSU Tigers, Cam’s contribution to the team was significant. In the 2021 NBA draft, Cam was selected as the 27th overall pick by the Brooklyn Nets. His transition into the NBA was remarkably smooth. Thomas made his professional debut in the Summer League, where he led all players in scoring, averaging 27 points per game. His sensational performance earned him a spot on the All-Summer League First Team.

In his rookie NBA season, Cam continued his impressive form, regularly delivering high scoring games off the bench for the Nets. His scoring prowess and ability to lead offense instantly made him a fan favorite.
