Born on November 25, 1997, Dennis Cliff Smith Jr., a highly talented American basketball professional, remains a dynamic player for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). His journey from a freshman at North Carolina State University to the NBA showcases a story of passion, resilience, and commitment to excellence, making him one of the premier players in the league today.

Smith’s basketball prowess became evident at Trinity Christian School in Fayetteville, North Carolina. As a freshman, he averaged 9.2 points and 3.0 assists per game in 2013, rapidly becoming a dominant force on the basketball court. As a sophomore, Smith led Trinity Christian to a victory in the 2014 NCISAA 1-A State Championship, earning the Most Valuable Player (MVP) honor.

Smith’s exceptional performance extended to his junior year, where he averaged 22.2 points per game, leading the Crusaders to a 23-10 record. His tenacity and skill earned him the 2015 Gatorade Basketball Player of the Year for North Carolina––a testament to his formidable basketball talent.

That summer, despite sustaining an injury, Smith led his AAU team, Team Loaded North Carolina (NC), to win the Adidas Uprising Gauntlet Championship. His agility and deftness on the court did not go unnoticed, solidifying his reputation as a highly recruited five-star player.

In September 2015, Smith committed to North Carolina State University (NC State), where he excelled in his freshman year, scoring 18.1 points and 6.2 assists per game on average. Smith earned second-team all-conference honors in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). His skillful maneuvering led him to be named the ACC Freshman of the Year––a commendable achievement that further highlighted his bright future in basketball.

Smith declared for the 2017 NBA Draft, where he was selected ninth overall by the Dallas Mavericks, marking the start of his professional basketball career. His first two seasons with the Mavericks showcased him as a force on the court, and he even recorded his first career triple-double.

However, his journey took a turn in 2019 when he was traded to the New York Knicks as part of a deal involving Kristaps Porziņģis, Tim Hardaway Jr., Trey Burke, and Courtney Lee. Smith proved his worth as a point guard, scoring a career-high 31 points in his third game with the Knicks.

Unfortunately, Smith’s time with the Knicks was short-lived. In February 2021, he was traded to the Detroit Pistons. Despite moving around, Smith continued to showcase his skills on the court, recording his third career triple-double while with the Pistons.

After his time with the Pistons ended, Smith signed with the Portland Trail Blazers as a free agent in September 2021. His stint with the Trail Blazers brought another critical career milestone––scoring a season-high 21 points. However, an unfortunate right elbow injury led to Smith being waived by the team in February 2022.

In the 2022 off-season, Smith returned to his hometown of North Carolina, signing with the Charlotte Hornets. His impressive performance at home was followed by yet another move. In July 2023, Smith signed with the Brooklyn Nets, his present team in the NBA.

Outside his professional NBA career, Smith signed a three-year endorsement deal with Under Armour in 2017. Despite his rigorous basketball schedule, Smith prioritizes his relationships, forging a close friendship with fellow Fayetteville native and iconic rapper, J. Cole.
