Fairfax Harrison was a prominent American figure, known for his significant contributions to the legal and business sectors in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born on March 13, 1869, Harrison’s legal and business career spanned numerous decades, carving a legacy that would shape American rail travel for generations.

Harrison began his legal career at the Southern Railway Company in 1896 after earning his law degree. His aptitude for finance and understanding of corporate law swiftly brought him to attention, and within a decade, he rose through the ranks to become Vice-President of Finance in 1906.

In 1913, Harrison’s unwavering dedication and evident leadership skills secured him the presidency of Southern Railway. Under his management, the company undertook a period of immense expansion and growth. He managed to extend Southern Railway’s network across 13 states, covering a staggering 8,000 miles, or 13,000 km – a feat unheard of at the time.

When the United States entered World War I, the federal government seized control of the railroads for wartime operations. Recognising Harrison’s expertise, the government appointed him to serve on the United States Railroad Administration board to ensure a smooth transition during the war years.

Post-war, Harrison worked tirelessly to revamp Southern Railway’s image, focusing on improving its public relations initiatives. He also spearheaded the upgrade of the locomotive fleet, introducing more powerful engines to enhance efficiency and capabilities of Southern’s transportation networks.

Harrison significantly increased the company’s railroad track and expanded the geographical area serviced by the railway, integrating more communities into the country’s transport system.

The Great Depression of the 1930s brought immense challenges, as it did for many businesses. However, Harrison’s leadership shone during this time of crisis. Despite the economic downturn, he managed to steer Southern Railway back to profitability by 1936, a testament to his business acumen and strategic foresight.

After retiring in 1937, Harrison’s legacy lived on in the railway system he had significantly advanced, and in the hundreds of communities that he connected through the Southern Railway. He passed away three months after his retirement on February 2, 1938, leaving a rich legacy in American railroad history. His life and career demonstrate the power of vision, resilience, and indefatigable determination.

On this occasion, it’s also noteworthy to mention Ethel Reed, another brilliant mind born on March 13. Born in 1874 and passing away in 1912, Reed was an internationally acclaimed American graphic artist whose contributions significantly shaped the artistic landscape. While quite separate in their fields of expertise, both Harrison and Reed contributed significantly to American history, leaving indelible marks on their respective industries. The U.S. Library of Congress has a c.1895 photograph of Reed, taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston, a testament to her recognition and acclaim.
