Payton Pritchard

Payton Michael Pritchard, an established professional basketball player, was born on January 28, 1998. Current member of the Boston Celtics in the NBA, Payton had a distinguished college career with the Oregon Ducks. He was honored as second-team all-conference in the Pac-12 during his sophomore year and advanced to final stages for the Naismith Trophy as a senior.

The Boston Celtics were quick to recruit this rising talent during the 2020 NBA draft, where Pritchard was picked in the prestigious 26th overall position. He then went on to grace the NBA Finals in 2022 with his superior gameplay. Earlier on in his high school journey at West Linn, Pritchard secured four consecutive state titles. Known for his scoring prowess, he scored an impressive 45 points in the Northwest Shootout, an all-star game between players from Oregon and Washington. During his freshman year, (2016–17) with the Ducks he averaged 7.4 points and 3.6 assists per game. The Ducks made their first Final Four appearance in the NCAA Tournament, where Pritchard was the only freshman in the starting lineup. This baptism by fire set the stage for his continued ascension in the basketball world.

In his sophomore year, Pritchard’s overall game had noticeably improved. This led him to score a career-high 29 points, eight assists, and six rebounds in a thrilling 84-79 victory over DePaul. He continued his growth well into his junior season, leading Oregon to an unlikely Pac 12 Tournament Championship and advancing to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. He demonstrated his prowess by averaging 12.9 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game.

During his senior season, Pritchard’s performance escalated, and he became one of the leading players in collegiate basketball. His ability to think on his feet became evident in a game against Washington, where he scored 22 points to secure a winning comeback in overtime. By this stage, his gameplay had influenced the Oregon team so heavily that they managed to clinch their second Pac-12 regular-season title with his help. This saw him average 20.5 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game and be awarded the Pac-12 Player of the Year, along with the Bob Cousy Award for the nation’s top point guard.

Upon entering the NBA, Pritchard signed a rookie contract with the Boston Celtics, which opened the door for further development. He made a great impact in his debut game by scoring 17 points against the Philadelphia 76ers in December 2020. After the game, he continued to show progress by setting a career-high of 23 points in a win over the Toronto Raptors.

In the Summer League of 2021, Pritchard shone for the Celtics and was named All-Summer League First Team by averaging an impressive 17 points and 8 assists. He also aided the Celtics in reaching the 2022 NBA Finals, even though they were eventually defeated by the Golden State Warriors.

Not resting on his laurels, Pritchard marked the ending of the 2022–23 season with his first career triple-double in a game against the Atlanta Hawks, earning a new career-high of 30 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists. Mid-contract, Pritchard and the Celtics agreed on a well-deserved four-year, $30 million contract extension before the 2023 season started.

An avid representative of the US, Pritchard participated in the 2015 FIBA 3×3 Under-18 World Championship where he scored an impressive 9 three-pointers against Poland. He also played for the US team in the 2017 FIBA U19 World Cup in Egypt, averaging 9.0 points, 3.1 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game. His performances contributed to Team USA clinching the bronze medal, and he was named to the All-Star Five.
