Davon Reed's Biography
Davon Malcolm Reed, born on June 11, 1995, is a renowned American professional basketball player of Puerto Rican descent. He currently plays for the Mexico City Capitanes as part of the NBA G league. Reed’s journey to professional basketball started at Princeton Day School, located in Ewing Township, New Jersey, where he resided. He attended this school from 2009 until his graduation in 2013. During his time at Princeton, Reed amassed an impressive record, scoring 2102 points and setting the highest score in the school’s history.
Reed then attended the University of Miami from 2013 to 2017, playing college basketball for the Miami Hurricanes. Throughout his four seasons at Miami, Reed averaged 10.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. During his last season, he boasted an even more impressive record: his points per game average shot up to 14.9, and his rebounds per game to 4.8. Reed developed a reputation for his shooting skills and his ability to defend four positions, accomplishments that didn’t go unnoticed. As a senior, he was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Third Team, the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Team, and even earned the prestigious Skip Prosser Award for Scholar Athletes.
Post college, Reed’s journey as a professional basketball player began when he was picked 32nd in the 2017 NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns. Reed was plunged right into the world of professional basketball in the 2017 NBA Summer League, alongside fellow rookies Josh Jackson and Alec Peters, and other Suns’ players.
Reed made his mark during the 2017 Summer League, averaging 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game in six matches. Following his performance, Reed officially signed a four-year deal with the Suns on July 6, 2017. However, Reed’s journey was met with an unfortunate setback in August 2017 when he had to undergo surgery on his left meniscus. Subsequently, Reed was assigned to the Northern Arizona Suns, playing his first professional game with them on January 2, 2018. Despite the back and forth between Phoenix and Northern Arizona, Reed made his NBA debut with Phoenix on January 14.
After wrapping up a successful stint with the Phoenix Suns, Reed experienced a brief hiccup when he was waived by the Suns in October 2018. However, his professional career stayed its course as he signed a two-way contract with Indiana Pacers and their NBA G League affiliate, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, just three days later.
In September 2019, Reed returned to his college hometown to sign with the Miami Heat and was subsequently added to the Sioux Falls Skyforce roster, the NBA G League affiliate of the Heat. During his time with Sioux Falls, Reed wrote history by being the only player in the G League to have at least 500 points, 250 rebounds, and 150 assists.
In a pursuit to explore international arenas, Reed signed with the Taoyuan Pilots of the P. League+ in November 2020. However, he returned to the states halfway through 2021.
In August and September 2021, Reed played for the Denver Nuggets in the NBA Summer League and signed with them, although he was waived at the end of the training camp. Despite these ups and downs, Reed stayed the course, signing with Grand Rapids Gold, and later rejoining Denver Nuggets on multiple 10-day contracts.
In July 2022, he re-signed with the Denver Nuggets on a multiyear deal, only to be traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in a four-team trade in February 2023. Reed, however, was waived by the Lakers in April 2023.
Following the Lakers, Reed briefly played for Prometey of the Latvian–Estonian Basketball League, then joined the Memphis Hustle of the NBA G League in December 2023. In March 2024, Reed was picked second overall in the BSN draft by the Santeros de Aguada but never played a game for them. As of September 2024, Reed was traded to the Mexico City Capitanes where he continues his professional basketball career.
