Oumar Sy Bio
Born on January 20, 1978, Omar Sy is an acclaimed French actor, particularly known for his outstanding performances in television and film. He hails from the small town of Trappes, located in the Yvelines department of the Île-de-France region. The son of West African immigrants, Sy grew up as the fourth of eight children in a culturally rich household that savored the tastes of both Mauritania and Senegal, where his mother and father hailed from, respectively. The family would often visit Senegal, their ancestral home, every alternate summer and spoke the West African language of Pulaar at home, giving Sy a deep connection with his cultural roots. His father, Demba, worked in an auto parts factory, and his mother, Diaratou, served as a house cleaner providing an upbringing steeped in diligence and tenacity.
Sy began his journey in the entertainment industry shortly after completing high school in 1996. He initially worked at Radio Nova, where he developed a bond with fellow comedian Fred Testot, who would later become a frequent collaborator. The two comedians worked together in the popular comedy-drama television show known as “Service après-vente des émissions” that aired on Canal+ from 2005 to 2012. Concurrently, Sy also appeared on the television game show Fort Boyard in 2006 and lent his voice to various characters in the French version of the video game Tomb Raider Legend as well as for a character in Disney’s Brother Bear.
Sy’s breakthrough performance arrived in 2011 when he starred in the comedy-drama film “Intouchables.” His powerful portrayal of a young man from the streets who becomes the caretaker of a wealthy quadriplegic, earned him considerable acclaim. This film became a sensation, becoming the highest-grossing French film, selling over 19 million tickets.
His stellar performance in the Intouchables brought Sy worldwide recognition and numerous awards. He received the esteemed César Award for Best Actor, an accolade that saw him become the first Black actor to win this award. He also earned the 2012 Globe de Cristal for Best Actor and a nomination for a Satellite Award for Best Actor.
Sy continued charming audiences and critics alike with his performances in blockbuster films like ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ in 2014 and ‘Jurassic World’ in 2015. He also showcased an impressive range of acting versatility by voicing animated characters, such as in ‘Transformers: The Last Knight.’
In 2021, Sy starred in the hit Netflix series “Lupin,” a modern reinterpretation of the famous François Cluzet novels which has become one of the most-watched non-English series on Netflix. This led to Sy signing a multi-year feature film deal with the streaming giant. That same year, he was recognized on Time 100’s list of the most influential people globally.
Not just prolific in his professional life, Sy has equally made headlines for his robust personal life. He married Hélène, the mother of his five children, in a ceremony in Tremblay-sur-Mauldre in 2007. Together they created the non-profit organization CéKeDuBonheur to support children’s wards in French hospitals, and Siyah Organics, an organic food supplement company. Believing in a life without borders, the family moved to Los Angeles in 2012 where Sy continues to mesmerize audiences with his memorable performances and philanthropic ventures.
Being a devout Muslim and a supporter of Olympique de Marseille, Sy’s life is a beautiful blend of art, culture, and philanthropy. With his commitment to his craft and his desire to use his influence for the greater good, such as signing the Artists4Ceasefire open letter in October 2023, Omar Sy continues to inspire and lend hope to the upcoming generation of actors and actresses worldwide.
