Kelvin Gastelum is an American mixed martial artist competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in the middleweight division. Born and raised in Yuma, Arizona, Gastelum began his martial arts journey at a young age. By the time he was fifteen years old, he had earned a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu from Master Ricardo Barros. He then became an 8-time State Champion wrestler for Cibola High School before attending Iowa Central Community College to compete in wrestling for two seasons.
Gastelum entered The Ultimate Fighter 17 competition on February 15th 2013 where he would soon become one of sixteen welterweights under contract with Zuffa, LLC after winning against Uriah Hall on June 1st and becoming “The Ultimate Fighter”. After joining the UFC as a full-time fighter, Gastelum made his debut on July 6th 2013 at UFC Fight Night 27 defeating Brian Melancon via TKO.
Throughout his career so far, Gastelum has been very successful having nine wins and six losses since entering professional MMA fighting competitions with only one disqualification due to illegal strikes when facing Vitor Belfort at UFC Fight Night 106 . He also holds impressive victories over former champions Michael Bisping and Tyron Woodley as well as contenders like Johny Hendricks and Neil Magny – making him one of most experienced fighters currently active in the octagon today despite being just 29 years old. Throughout his fights Kelvin has demonstrated both power striking ability along with technical grappling skills which have secured him four submission wins out of his total nine professional MMA wins; this makes him even more dangerous inside the cage against opponents who don’t take into account that they may need to go beyond 5 rounds if they wish to win against him via decision depending on how they choose to fight Kelvin standup or grapple based off their respective combat styles or training backgrounds.. Furthermore Kelvin’s reach advantage has played heavily into how many decisions are made during these matchups – especially when faced up against much smaller opponents such as Rick Story & Cardio Leites
In 2019 alone desite not being able to secure any major titles yet but still managed three consecutive wins including two TKO’s vs Ian Heinisch & Anthony Hernandez plus another close split decision call victory over Edmen Shahbazyan while competing within 185lbs weight class respectively which demonstrates that this fighter is capable of taking down some difficult opposition regardless if it goes past five rounds or not.. In 2020 however it seems like there could be some interesting opportunities opening up for Kelvin given recent events within title picture where Israel Adesanya moved up weight class last April leaving vacated Middleweight strap available now for contenders willing put themselves forward proving worthy replacement next champion status.. Currently no official announcement been made yet upcoming match ups but looking back through history its safe assume Gastlelums chances will increase significantly hoping come away victor by end year!
