BIOGRAPHY

Junior dos Santos Almeida, commonly known as Junior dos Santos, is a Brazilian mixed martial artist and former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion. He currently competes in the heavyweight division of Bellator MMA. Dos Santos began his professional career in 2006, competing in various promotions throughout Brazil before signing with UFC in 2008. He rose to prominence after winning The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights tournament and immediately challenging for the title at UFC 90 on October 25th, 2008.

Dos Santos defeated Fabricio Werdum by TKO to become the first Brazilian born fighter to ever win the UFC Heavyweight Championship belt. Throughout his championship reign he defended it three times; against Cain Velasquez twice and Frank Mir once before eventually losing it at UFC 155 on December 29th, 2012 after a grueling five round battle with current champion Cain Velasquez. After his loss for the title dos Santos went on to fight another two more fights within the promotion; one win against Mark Hunt at UFC 160 and one loss against Stipe Miocic at UFC 211 before being released from UFC in June 2018 after not reaching an agreement with them upon contract renewal negotiations.

Following his release from The Octagon junior signed with Bellator MMA later that same year .
