BIOGRAPHY

Oluwasegun Olubi is a renowned professional footballer currently playing as a linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL) in the United States. Born on November 1, 1999, Olubi first saw the light of day in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. As life would have it, he migrated quite a lot during his early years due to family movements.

Shortly after his birth, his family relocated to New Jersey, then to St. Paul, Minnesota, when he was two. The family shifted base again to Bullhead City, Arizona, planting seeds of adaptability in young Olubi. His global exposure further expanded when, at ten, he stayed briefly in London, England, following yet another family move. After spending time in London, his family moved back to Bullhead City and subsequently settled in Corona, California.

Olubi flew the banner of Centennial High School in Corona and etched an indelible mark in both football and track and field, earning a three-year varsity letter in both fields. Being an exceptional sprinter and jumper, he recorded personal bests of 11.33 and 23.23 seconds in the 100 and 200 meters races respectively. A notable achievement of his is a 22′ 3” long jump and a school-record 45′ 11” triple jump. In his final year as a football player, his tally in eight games read: 38 tackles, an interception, and one pass breakup, leading him to bag all-league honors.

Venturing into college, Olubi first graced the College of Idaho in Caldwell. Here, he played vigorous football for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), ending his season at second place on the team rack with 85 tackles to his name. He also made half a sack, 10 pass breakups, forced a fumble and blocked a kick. His next stop was Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California. His resilience shone through during his spell there, surviving without a meal plan by working part-time at two burger joints. His footballing stint at Saddleback was marked by him leading the team in tackles, recording two sacks and making an interception.

In 2019, Olubi transferred to Harding University, Arkansas but his time there was short-lived. After his economics major was discontinued, he decided to leave, but not before making an impact on the football field: playing 12 games, making 23 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery. In 2020, he walked onto the football field under the banner of San Diego State University who offered him a chance after impressing a coach who knew their personnel.

In his first season with the San Diego State Division I FBS program, he played a backup role in seven of the games, recording 15 tackles among which five were solo. Against Hawaii, he made the score sheet by returning a 71-yard interception touchdown. This impressive performance resulted in him being put on scholarship ahead of the 2021 season, where he made appearances in 14 games (seven as a starter), racking up 53 tackles, two sacks, and forcing two fumbles. His feats earned him a nomination amongst 88 others for the Burlsworth Trophy for best players who began their college careers as walk-ons, although he didn’t secure the prize.

In the 2022 NFL draft, Olubi remained unselected but was quickly scooped up by the San Francisco 49ers who offered him a free-agent contract. However, he was dropped during the final roster cuts. Unperturbed, Olubi signed with the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad on September 1, 2022, and was later promoted to the active roster for their Week 16 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. In his debut, he appeared on nine special team snaps playing in one more game that year, consequently making one tackle.

On January 9, 2023, Olubi signed a reserve/future contract, ensuring that he would remain in the Colts fold. His consistent performance earned him a spot in the team’s final roster in 2023. Fast forward to January 8, 2024, Oluwasegun Olubi committed his immediate future to the Indianapolis Colts, signing a one-year contract extension. Olubi’s journey through the ranks serves as an inspiration for aspiring footballers worldwide, demonstrating the values of hard work, consistency, and an unbeatable spirit. His STAR is definitely on the rise.
