Trey Sermon

2017 marked the onset of Sermon’s impressive career as a freshman at Oklahoma University. Showing a disciplined commitment to the game, Sermon played throughout the 14-game season, juggling between playing and starting three games. By the end of the season, the records bore testimony to his extraordinary skills on the field – 744 yards on 121 carries, and five touchdowns.

Showing no signs of slowing down, Sermon upped his game in his sophomore year, sharing playtime with Kennedy Brooks. Despite the shared time, Sermon managed an impressive run of 947 yards on 164 carries, rounding off the season with 13 touchdowns. His junior year in 2019 saw him playing in nine games, with 385 yards on 54 carries, and securing four touchdowns.

Upon completing his term at Oklahoma, Sermon transferred to Ohio State University as a graduate student in 2020. It was here that he made a significant mark on school history. The 2020 Big Ten Championship Game held against North-western University saw Sermon achieving a spectacular rushing record of 331 yards, the highest rushing yardage by an Ohio State player in a single game. This accomplishment also held the #1 spot for the highest yardage in a Football Bowl Subdivision championship game.

The subsequent Sugar Bowl game against Clemson had Sermon displaying similar brilliance by rushing for 193 yards, scoring a rushing touchdown, and catching 4 passes for 61 yards, contributing significantly to a 49-28 victory. However, the high of the season experienced a downslide as Sermon suffered an injury in the 2021 National Championship Game against Alabama, where he could not play beyond the first play.

Sermon’s illustrious college career gave way to an even more thrilling journey in professional football. He was drafted as the 88th pick by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft. Following a fruitful season that saw his debut in the third week, Sermon’s tenure at the 49ers ended in August 2022 after significant contributions including 41 carries for 167 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown as a rookie.

In the following days, beginning September 1, 2022, he played briefly with the Philadelphia Eagles, who waived him due to injury in August 2023. However, his football journey found a new lease of life when he was signed to the practice squad of the Indianapolis Colts on September 19, 2023. Following his promotion to the regular squad, Sermon took part in 14 games and was integral to the Colts’ successful 2023 season with his recorded 35 carries and 160 rushing yards.

Demonstrating exceptional abilities, Sermon solidified his position in the Colts’ squad, leading to him signing a new contract with the Indianapolis Colts on March 14, 2024.
