Austin Ajiake

Austin Ajiake, born on June 30, 2000, has made notable strides in the professional football landscape. Currently a linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts in the National Football League (NFL), his journey through the sport traces back to his humble beginnings in Hayward, California. Raised in Fremont, Ajiake would go on to lay the groundwork of his future success at Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, where he distinguished himself as a two-sport athlete in football and track and field.

It was in college where Ajiake truly began to make his mark. He attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) where he proved to be a formidable force on their football team. His 2018 season was a taste of what was to come, as he played 10 games and recorded five tackles. The following year, he participated in every game of the season, improving his record to 14 tackles.

The challenges of the ensuing year did not slow him down, as the 2020 season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite only playing six games, Ajiake managed to record seven tackles. His resilience and tenacity were further tested in the 2021 season when he faced an injury that limited his appearances to only eight games. Nevertheless, he came away with 74 tackles, an effort that earned him an honorable mention to the All-Mountain West Conference team.

The 2022 season was a banner year for Ajiake. His participation in all 12 games resulted in 132 tackles, making him the fifth-highest tackler in college football nationwide and the fourth-highest in UNLV’s history. His impressive statistics didn’t stop there, with four sacks, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery also to his credit. These achievements led to Ajiake being chosen for prestigious industry recognitions, including the 2022 Hula Bowl and the 2022 East-West Shrine Bowl. He was also named to the first-team All-MWC team. In addition, his academic and on-field performances saw him bag the 2022-2023 Mountain West Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

Upon graduation, Ajiake was overlooked in the initial selection for the 2023 NFL draft. However, he later agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers on April 30, 2023, which never led to a finalized contract. He also was sought after by the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL and the Denver Broncos, neither of whom secured his signature. A series of short-lived signings and releases saw Ajiake included on the practice squads for the Las Vegas Raiders and the Green Bay Packers, and attempting to secure a spot on the Buffalo Bills, ultimately without success.

Ending the year on a hopeful note, Ajiake signed with the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad on December 28. The New Year saw him start on a promising note as the Colts signed him to a reserve/futures contract on January 9, 2024. However, his time with the Colts had a rocky start with Ajiake being waived by the Colts on August 27, 2024, but was quickly re-signed to the practice squad.
