Makai Polk, born on August 4, 2001, is a talented American footballer who has honed his skills as a wide receiver, most recently with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Raised in Richmond, California, Makai’s journey through the intricate world of football embarks at Susan Miller Dorsey High School, where he first demonstrated his extraordinary potential. Seeking new challenges and opportunities, he later moved to El Cerrito High School in anticipation of his senior year. Makai’s high school years were instrumental, shaping his foundational capability and priming him for the exciting trajectory that awaited him at the collegiate level.
Upon graduating from high school, Makai elected to join the California Golden Bears, establishing the initial phase of his collegiate career. In his debut season, Makai illustrated his budding talent with 19 successful receptions amassing up to 295 yards and netting 2 touchdowns. Despite the 2020 season being disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, he managed to display his innate resilience and tenacity by playing in four games and securing 17 passes for 183 yards and delivering one touchdown.
At the end of the 2020 season, embracing the opportunity to explore broader horizons, Makai entered the transfer portal. His decision resulted in his move to Mississippi State. There, his football career soared to new heights as he was promptly named a starter. He seized this opportunity and emerged as a true leader in his first season, leading the Southeastern Conference with 105 receptions, amassing a total of 1,048 yards and scoring nine touchdowns.
Following this victorious season, Makai made the career-shaping decision to forgo the rest of his collegiate eligibility and declare his participation in the 2022 NFL draft. Despite going undrafted, Makai refused to be deterred. In May 2022, he was signed as a free agent out of college by the Baltimore Ravens. His tenure with the Ravens proved to be short-lived as he was waived on August 30, 2022, and then signed on to the practice squad the day following. He was subsequently waived again on September 27, 2022.
Makai’s journey took another exciting turn on September 28, 2022, when he was signed by the New York Giants to their practice squad. With the Giants, he saw his career progressing as he signed a reserve/future contract on January 22, 2023. However, in yet another twist, Makai was waived by the Giants on July 24, 2023. Not one to stay with a setback, he was picked up off waivers by the Ravens the very next day, only to be waived once more on August 10, 2023.
Despite the adversities and constant shifting within organizations, Makai’s determination and drive for the game never wavered. In a turn of refreshing news on May 20, 2024, Makai was signed by the Toronto Argonauts. The move marked an exciting new chapter in the committed athlete’s career as he now takes on challenges on the CFL turf, showcasing his wide receiver skills and undeterred competitive spirit on a fresh platform.
