BIOGRAPHY

Eric Maxwell Johnson was born on September 15, 1979 in Needham, Massachusetts. While not always a household name, his football talent, personal charisma, and significant marital ties would eventually thrust him into the spotlight.

Johnson’s involvement with football started early, nurturing his talent in high school while attending Needham High School and Belmont Hill School. He further honed his skills while attending Yale University, becoming Yale’s all-time reception leader with 181 catches for 2,144 yards during his college career.

Beyond his academic pursuits, where he studied History, he joined the Yale Bulldogs football team as a wide receiver. His extraordinary performance quickly became apparent, leading to accolitive mentions in All Ivy League Teams across 1998, 1999, and 2000. Johnson’s senior year at Yale granted him the title of “Yale’s first All-America first team selection”, a crown he won’t be shedding anytime soon.

The NFL took interest in Johnson following his bulwark performance at Yale. He was drafted in the seventh round of the 2001 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers, as the 224th overall pick. Standing at 6-foot-3 and 226 pounds, Johnson was a formidable force on the field, beginning his NFL career as a tight end for the 49ers.

Johnson proved his mettle during his first season with the 49ers, racking up impressive stats boasting 40 receptions for 362 yards and three touchdowns. In his third season, injuries kept him off the field, but this did not stall his progress. He returned stronger in the 2004 season with a jaw-dropping 82 catches, amassing 825 yards, and two touchdowns. His sterling performance that year made him the 49ers’ leading receiver, marking the zenith of his career.

In 2007, Johnson signed with the New Orleans Saints after an injury-riddled tenure with the 49ers. unfortunately, his tenure with the saints was plagued with similar physiological ailments. His stint with the Saints was short-lived, lasting only two seasons within which his stats took a drastic hit. Eric Johnson went from career-high statistics to a rather unfortunate low, recording only 48 receptions over two seasons due to continuous ailments. In 2009, Johnson was released by the Saints, effectively ending his NFL career.

During his tenure in the NFL, Johnson played a combative total of 87 games, amassing an average of 24.8 yards per game. He managed 25 receptions per touchdown, bolstering his team’s prowess on the field. His presence was instrumental in several key plays, setting up the likes of Jeff Garcia and Drew Brees for game-winning strikes. His collective stats stand at a laudable 224 catches, 2,178 yards, and a respectable 9 touchdowns.

Johnson’s life after football was just as eventful. He pivoted towards a life in the limelight, dating and subsequently marrying entertainer Jessica Simpson in 2014.
