BIOGRAPHY

DeForest George Buckner, a professional American football player, was born on March 17, 1994. Having a Samoan mother and an African American father, Buckner spent his childhood days in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended the Punahou School where he emerged as a promising four-star recruit. As a high schooler, he demonstrated athletic abilities not just on the football field, but also on the basketball court by becoming the Hawaii Gatorade Player of the Year in basketball in 2012.

Buckner’s football journey began as a true freshman in 2012 when he played all 13 games and completed his freshman season with impressive statistics. Statistics that only got more impressive as the years rolled on. Despite being a possible first-round pick in the NFL draft after his impressive junior year performances, Buckner chose to return for his senior season. His decision paid off handsomely when he experienced another successful season, making remarkable numbers and winning the 2015 Pac-12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year award by the Pac-12 coaches. Buckner then officially declared he would enter the 2016 NFL draft and was considered one of the top-ranked defensive ends in the competition.

He was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. His rookie season was exemplary, having led all NFL defensive linemen with 1,108 snaps on the season and ranked second with his 73 tackles. As a result, he was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team. His second professional season was equally impressive with 61 tackles, five pass deflections, three sacks, and a forced fumble in 16 games and starts.

Buckner continued to deliver top-notch performances, and his hard work eventually earned him a place on the Pro Bowl roster. This was a validation of his hard work and dedication, which continued in the following year where he recorded 61 tackles, 7.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, two pass deflections, and a touchdown in 16 games and starts. Buckner’s performance saw him earn a place on the Second-team All-Pro.

Having transitioned to the Indianapolis Colts in 2020, Buckner continued to live up to his reputation as a formidable defensive tackle. His first season with the Colts was studded with accolades, including being named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for December. He was able to continue this trend into his following two seasons with the Colts.

Over the course of 2022, despite playing the entire year with a UCL tear in his left elbow, he had stellar performances, having 74 combined tackles, 8 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles in 17 games. In fact, his performance saw him earn his third Pro Bowl nomination.

In the most recent season of 2023, Buckner played in all 17 games, making a career-high 81 tackles and finishing third on the team with eight sacks. Accomplishing another milestone, Buckner had a 26-yard fumble return for a touchdown in Week 1 against the Jaguars. By April 2024, in recognition of his incredible contributions to the team, the Colts extended Buckner’s contract for two additional years, until the 2026 season.

Off the field, Buckner enjoys a happy family life with his wife, Ashlyn, and their son. With a solid professional record behind him and promising future ahead, Buckner continues to be a player to watch, as his dedication and talent continue to shape the course of his professional career.
