Daniel Faalele's Biography

Australian born Daniel Faalele, whose dynamic skill on the gridiron has earned him professional acclaim, is a renowned American football guard for the Baltimore Ravens, an esteemed member of the National Football League (NFL). Born on 9 November 1999, Faalele has forged an impressive path in American football, from his early years in Australia to his current stardom within the NFL.

Faalele, a native of Melbourne, Victoria, has an inherently athletic pedigree. His Samoan father and Tongan mother were both athletes, with his father towering at 6’4″ and weighing a substantial 290 pounds. From this blend of natural stature and physical agility, a young Faalele delved into his athletic journey, initially exploring basketball and rugby union. However, it wasn’t long before his talent was recognized and rerouted into a wholly different sporting arena.

As destiny would have it, a member of the University of Hawaii’s football coaching team noticed Faalele during a scouting mission in Australia. Following this, Faalele partook in a local satellite camp conducted by Michigan head coach, Jim Harbaugh, and quickly garnered attention from an array of Division I programs.

This transformative period saw Faalele traversing across the globe to play football at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Although new to the sport in 2016, through intense practice and sheer will, he secured a coveted starting position on IMG’s offensive line in 2017. His palpable influence contributed to an undefeated season, which was further garnished with an invitation for Faalele to partake in the 2018 Under Armour All-America Game. As a testament to his escalating reputation, Faalele, rated a four-star prospect, chose to play college football at Minnesota, forsaking offers from prestigious football programs offered to him including Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, and Michigan.

At Minnesota, Faalele demonstrated his prowess by featuring in ten matches as a true freshman and holding down the right tackle position for the final eight games of that season. These remarkable contributions were recognized as he was named ‘honorable mention’ All-Big Ten Conference. A similar feat was achieved in his sophomore year, where he started 11 matches as a right tackle and was again listed in the ‘honorable mention’ All-Big Ten.

Yet, the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic brought a sudden halt to Faalele’s college football journey. Despite assumptions that Faalele might leverage his potential NFL draft position amid the pandemic, he chose to honour his commitment, returning to Minnesota for his senior year. In his last match on 28 December 2021, Faalele etched an indelible mark by scoring his first career touchdown in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl against West Virginia, exhibiting his intrinsic ability to adapt and succeed.

At the apex of his amateur journey, Faalele was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft, 110th overall, by the Baltimore Ravens. With his imposing weight of 174 kilograms, Faalele instantaneously became the heaviest active rostered player in the depths of the NFL history.
