BIOGRAPHY

The Los Angeles Chargers, in the year 2022, embarked on their 53rd season as a part of the National Football League (NFL), marking an overall existence of 63 years. This year also represented their seventh duration in the Greater Los Angeles Area, their third year playing their home games at SoFi Stadium and their second year playing under coach Brandon Staley. There was a noticeable improvement in their record from the previous year, moving from 9–8 to a commendable Week 17 victory against the Los Angeles Rams.

The Chargers reached a significant milestone by clinching a playoff berth for the first time since 2018, as a result their Week 16 victory over the formidable Indianapolis Colts. Interestingly, this was their first playoff appearance without their veteran quarterback Philip Rivers since them being based in San Diego in 1995. However, their journey in the playoffs had a shocking twist when they experienced an unfortunate loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card round, despite having a 27–0 lead during the second quarter. This clutch match ended on a last-moment field goal, allowing the Jaguars to seize victory 31–30.

The Chargers’ setback represents the third largest failure to hold on to a lead in the entire history of the NFL postseasons, the bigger records belonging to the 1992 Houston Oilers and the 2013 Kansas City Chiefs. Unfortunately for the Chargers, it marks the biggest blown lead they have ever experienced, making it their first such experience since 2009. This was also the first time they faced a loss during the Wild Card playoff since 2004.

As they pulled the curtains on their 2021 season, the Chargers made diligent moves by signing eleven players from their practice squad to reserve/future free agent contracts. This was a crucial call before stepping into the new season, and it added significant talent pool to their roster. The team was also cognizant of the rules permitting an elevation of up to two players from the practice squad to the active game day roster per week. Keeping this in mind, the Chargers maximized the utilization of their resources without the risk of exposing their players to waivers. They were also cautious in safeguarding a maximum of four practice squad players to prevent any chance of them being signed by rival teams.

The team’s preseason schedule and opponents were officially announced on May 12, 2022. To ensure efficiency and team-building, the Chargers conducted joint practices with the Dallas Cowboys on August 17 and 18 at the Jack Hammett Sports Complex in Costa Mesa, California. While the chargers faced various challenges, they also showcased their potential. In a significant game moment, the player Allen managed back-to-back catches of 19 and 42 yards against Las Vegas, setting up the Chargers for a potential victory. Indeed, since his rookie year in 2013, he had cemented himself as a key player in the Chargers’ offensive unit.

Over the years, the Chargers saw diverse changes in their personnel, from management and coaching staff to players across all categories. The team has come a long way since its origins, adapted to changes, and has maintained its key identity as a force to be reckoned with in the NFL, creating unforgettable expansive memories in the wide world of sports. Now based in Los Angeles, the Chargers continue to leave their mark in the history of American football, displaying their tenacity and driven commitment towards the sport.
