Calvin Munson's Biography

Born on December 27, 1994, Calvin Christopher Munson, a free-agent American football linebacker, has etched a remarkable journey in the world of football. Munson’s tryst with football took off during his schooling years when he attended Francis Howell High School in St. Charles. During this phase, he showcased his football dexterity and achieved the titles of First-team All-State and First-team All-District linebacker. His phenomenal skills on the field secured him the Missouri Defensive Player of the Year award.

Not just football, his high school years were also embellished with a prowess for baseball. With the Vikings, Munson’s talent in baseball flourished as he got selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2013 Major League Baseball draft’s 31st round. His baseball ability was duly recognized as he got selected to the ABCA/Rawlings High School All-America Baseball Second Team.

However, instead of signing with the Cardinals, Calvin chose to prioritize his football ambition and attended San Diego State University. During his time at SDSU, his relentless dedication towards football earned him an array of laurels. He was twice elected for the First-team All-Mountain West Conference and was recognized as the Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year twice by the San Diego State Aztecs football program.

His football career took a significant turn when he secured a contract as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants following the 2017 NFL draft. Munson made a memorable first career start as a middle linebacker in Week 2 for the Giants, substituting for the injured B. J. Goodson.

Despite experiencing fluctuations in his career, Munson showed resilience and perseverance. He was briefly waived by the Giants on September 1, 2018, and was signed to the practice squad. However, his stint with the Giants was short-lived as he was released about ten days later. A new chapter opened in Munson’s career when he was contracted to the New England Patriots’ practice squad on October 8, 2018. Munson had his taste of significant triumph when he was part of the Patriots’ victory in Super Bowl LIII against the Los Angeles Rams.

After getting released during the final roster cuts on August 31, 2019, Munson found a new opportunity with the Miami Dolphins, who signed him from the Patriots practice squad in December 2019. However, his journey encountered some obstacles as he was placed on the active/non-football injury list at the start of the Dolphins’ training camp in July 2020. After a brief period of recovery, Munson was activated again in August 2020.

In March 2021, the Dolphins tendered Munson an exclusive-rights free agent contract, which he signed in April. However, he was waived by the Dolphins later in August and re-signed to the practice squad in September. October 2021 saw him signing with the Patriots off the Dolphins practice squad, but he was waived in December of the same year. Munson found his way back to the Dolphins the very next day after he was claimed off waivers. An unfortunate injury in August 2022 resulted in Munson being placed on injured reserve. He was eventually released in October.

Two days after his release, Munson signed to the Patriots practice squad and eventually signed a reserve/future contract in January 2023. Facing another setback in his career, Munson was waived by the Patriots in August of the same year and re-signed to the practice squad. His current journey since December 2023 has been with the Dolphins, who signed him off the Patriots practice squad. Through the course of his football career, Calvin Christopher Munson has shown resilience and a never-give-up attitude, even when faced with various challenges and uncertainty.
