Thomas Morstead

Thomas James Morstead, born on March 8, 1986, carved out a successful career as an American professional football punter. Born and raised in the Houston suburb of Pearland, Texas, Morstead was a natural athlete from an early age. Along with an elder brother, Patrick, the brothers were the backbone of their high school’s football and basketball teams. Besides demonstrating his athletic prowess, Morstead excelled academically and got elected to the National Honor Society. It won’t be wrong to say that Morstead was as much at home on the playing field as he was in the classroom.

Though Morstead secured scholarship offers from prestigious schools like Rice, Texas, Texas Christian, and Missouri, he chose to attend Southern Methodist University (SMU) in 2004. After taking the initial year as a redshirt, Morstead took over as the place-kicker and punter in 2006. His average of 43.82 yards on 50 attempts was considered the best since Craig James’s performance in 1982.

Morstead’s career took a more serious turn when he got selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL draft. He showed immense talent in his rookie season, securing 58 punts with a 43.59 average. Despite being new to the league, Morstead played a pivotal role in the Saints’ victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV, where he executed a successful onside kick that led to a touchdown.

However, although the spotlight was on Morstead, he remained grounded and humble, attributing his success to his teammates and perfect execution of the play. His career continued to thrive, breaking records and setting new ones. Most notably, in 2011, Morstead set a record for the most kickoff touchbacks in a single game with nine and the most in a single season with 68.

His abilities did not go unnoticed by his team, and in 2012, the Saints rewarded his efforts with a six-year extension worth $21.9 million, making him the second-highest paid punter in the NFL. His career went further up when he got elected to the Pro Bowl due to his record-setting performance in net punting yardage during the 2012 season.

In subsequent seasons, Morstead continued to be a force to reckon with, delivering consistent performances. His exceptional display of toughness and sportsmanship during an NFC Divisional Round against the Minnesota Vikings, where he continued playing despite a severe rib injury, earned him respect from the Vikings’ fans, who responded by making significant donations to his charity.

Morstead switched to the Atlanta Falcons and the Miami Dolphins before signing with the New York Jets in 2023. His performances were characteristically exceptional, punctuated by a well-remembered episode during a game against the Buffalo Bills, where Morstead accidentally kicked a punt directly into the buttocks of his teammate, Trent Sherfield, resulting in a viral moment hilariously dubbed the “Butt Punt.”

Away from the spotlight, Morstead is a devoted family man, happily married to his wife, Lauren, with whom he shares five lovely children. They established a charity called “What You Give Will Grow” in 2014. A fervent Catholic, Morstead even co-authored a book with Sean Jensen named “The Middle School Rules of Thomas Morstead.”

By 2024, Thomas James Morstead re-signed with the Jets, boasting a career that has uniquely combined the highs of professional victories with the personal fulfillment. Both on and off the field, Morstead is an example of perseverance, drive, and steadfast commitment to living a life of purpose.
