Jeff Dowtin's Biography
Jeffrey Lee Dowtin Jr., born on May 10, 1997, is a noteworthy American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Philadelphia 76ers in the National Basketball Association (NBA), under a two-way contract with NBA G League’s Delaware Blue Coats. Prior to making his mark in the NBA, Dowtin honed his skills in college, playing basketball for the Rhode Island Rams.
Dowtin established his love for basketball early in his life, attending St. John’s College and excelling as a basketball player. As a senior player, he commanded the court, managing to average 15.3 points and five assists per game. His leadership saw the Cadets score a commendable 29-5 record, including a formidable 16-2 point in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. Dowtin’s prodigious talents didn’t go unrecognized; he made it to the 2015-16 Washington Post All-Met Second Team and also earned All-DCSAA and All-WCAC honors.
In 2016, Dowtin’s rising star became apparent when Scout, Rivals, and ESPN identified him as a three-star recruit. His prowess as a point guard player was highlighted by ESPN, ranking him as the 43rd best in the nation. 247Sports also commended him as the 21st-best combo guard.
In college, Dowtin played for Rhode Island, participating in 128 games. His stats during this period were impressive, averaging 11 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1 steal, demonstrating a shooting performance of 44.7% from the field and 36.1% from behind the 3-point line. Dowtin’s effervescent performance was instrumental in Rhode Island Rams’ two NCAA tournament appearances in 2017 and 2018. As he transitioned into the role of a senior player, Dowtin improved his averages to 13.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists, which led him to earn a spot on the All-Atlantic 10 third team.
In spite of his achievements, Dowtin went undrafted in the 2020 NBA draft. However, shortly after on December 19, 2020, he signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Orlando Magic. Although this affirmation of his talent was temporary and he was waived the same day, he quickly transitioned to become an affiliate player with the NBA G League’s Lakeland Magic on January 24, 2021. In 15 games with Lakeland, he averaged 6.5 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in just under 20 minutes of play. His contribution to the team was notable, leading up to their victory against the Delaware Blue Coats to secure the G League championship.
Despite signing with Orlando Magic in September 2021, Dowtin was waived at the end of training camp. Yet, he didn’t give up and was soon claimed off waivers by the Golden State Warriors. His experience with the Warriors was brief but conclusive, turning his contract into a two-way deal with the Santa Cruz Warriors, before being waived at the start of 2022.
Dowtin started 2022 by signing a 10-day contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, which led to an assignment with the G League’s Wisconsin Herd after one appearance for the Bucks. After a brief stint with the Herd, he was reacquired by the Lakeland Magic in January 2022. Despite being removed from the team toward the end of January, he was reacquired by Lakeland early in February.
In late March 2022, Dowtin, resilient as ever, signed another 10-day contract with the Orlando Magic, before being reacquired by Lakeland once again in early April. His pursuit of excellence then led to his joining the Toronto Raptors for the 2022 NBA Summer League. Dowtin’s commitment and hard work were recognized and by July 2022; he signed a two-way contract with the Raptors. His journey with the Raptors lasted a little over a year, culminating in the signing of a standard contract by July 2023, only to be waived three months later.
Throughout these career ups and downs, Dowtin’s determination remained unwavering. In November 2023, he joined the Delaware Blue Coats and in March 2024, he signed a two-way deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, which was soon followed by a standard contract with the 76ers. This journey brought him back to the NBA, whereby he further reaffirmed his value by signing another two-way contract with the Sixers in July 2024.
Born to Lesa and Jeffrey Dowtin Sr., Dowtin has roots anchored in a supportive family including a sister, Jeleisa. His journey is a testatment to his resilient spirit, sporting prowess, and unwavering pursuit of excellence in the game he holds dear; basketball.
