JaVale Lindy McGee, also known as JaVale McGee, is a successful professional basketball player known for his significant contributions to several National Basketball Association (NBA) teams during his long-running career. Born on January 19, 1988, in Flint, Michigan, McGee grew a deep love for the sport under the influence of his mother, who is an Olympic gold medalist.

McGee’s early years were spent in Michigan, where he attended two high schools: Detroit Country Day School and Providence Christian, before switching to Hales Franciscan High School in Chicago, Illinois. The young sports enthusiast’s physical endurance and remarkable strategic thinking attracted the attention of the University of Nevada’s athletic scouts, leading to his outstanding career as a starting center for the University’s basketball team, Nevada Wolf Pack.

In his sophomore year, McGee delivered phenomenal statistics, averaging a 14.3-point and 7.3-rebound game average, attracting the attention of the NBA. In 2008, he chose to forego his remaining eligibility in college and joined the NBA draft. He was quickly selected 18th overall by the Washington Wizards, an achievement that used to be a dream now turned into an absolute reality.

As a member of the Washington Wizards, McGee’s undeniable talent and hard work carved his path, becoming the first Wizard to ever participate in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 2011. In the same year, he achieved his first career triple-double, grabbing the spotlight for blocking twelve shots, a feat that had not been accomplished since 2001.

When the NBA lockout occurred in 2011, McGee was one of the chosen NBPA leaders, demonstrating his influence beyond the court. In 2012, he was traded to the Denver Nuggets and, not long after, re-signed with them in a four-year, $44 million contract. His career was momentarily stalled due to a stress fracture that led to surgery in 2014.

Yet, McGee’s resilience and determination allowed him to bounce back even stronger. In 2016, he joined the Golden State Warriors, contributing significantly to the team’s victory in the NBA finals in 2017 and 2018. His following years were filled with further success; in 2018, he was signed on by the Los Angeles Lakers, where he won his third NBA Championship in 2020.

After spending a year with the Lakers, McGee was on the move again and played for the Cleveland Cavaliers before being traded back to the Denver Nuggets in 2021. In 2022, he became part of the Dallas Mavericks roster only to be waived a year later. As at the time of writing, McGee has found a new home playing for the Sacramento Kings, joining a growing list of teams he has represented at the highest level of professional basketball competition.

Similarly, his international basketball career comprises significant achievements, including being part of the U.S. national team’s mini-camp in 2009 and 2010. In 2021, he gained an Olympic gold medal, an achievement which he shares with his mother – a first in Olympic history.

Off the court, McGee established the Juglife Foundation in 2013. The organization is dedicated to promoting awareness about the importance of drinking water and staying hydrated. His commitment to giving back to underprivileged communities is evident in his partnership with Hope 4 Kids International, which involves building wells in Uganda.

Complementing his active playing career and philanthropic engagements, McGee showcased his personal life through a reality television show, “Mom’s Got Game,” co-starring his mother. He has been featured on numerous sports-related content and is known for his unique vegan diet, which he committed to in the summer of 2017 and initially adopted to shed off weight before the start of each season.
