JaMychal Green's Biography

JaMychal Green is an established American professional basketball player who most recently played for the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association, more commonly known as the NBA. His basketball journey began with his birth on June 21, 1990, and has been marked by several significant achievements both on the court and off it since then.

Green’s high-school years at Montgomery’s St. Jude were marked by several athletic milestones. He was instrumental in leading his school team to the Class A State Championship in 2006 and 2008, and was even voted the Most Valuable Player of the 2006 tournament. With over 2,500 points to his name in high school, Green managed to impress not just with his gameplay but also his academics, becoming a part of the National Honor Society. He bagged an array of accolades such as the 2008 Alabama Mr. Basketball, three-time Alabama Sportswriters Association “Player of the Year” from 2006 to 2008, and the 2008 McDonald’s All-American. ESPN lauded his talent by ranking him as the #6 overall and #1 power forward recruit in 2008.

His promising high-school performance led him to represent Team USA at the 2008 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship in Argentina, where he was coached by Anthony Grant, his future head coach at Alabama. He committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide over Ole Miss on August 23, 2007.

During his freshman year, Green was in the starting lineup for 31 out of 32 games and managed to average an impressive 11.6 points per game. And his streak of four consecutive double-doubles became the talk of the college basketball community. His sophomore season had him ranking 9th in the SEC in rebounding and 17th in scoring, thanks to his effort in the last 11 games of the 2009–10 season. He started his junior year by changing his jersey number from 32 to 1, but faced a setback through a three-game suspension resulting from “conduct detrimental to the team”.

Post his college career at Alabama, Green’s NBA journey began with the San Antonio Spurs. Despite not being drafted in the 2012 NBA draft, Green managed to join the Spurs for the NBA Summer League the same year. However, his tenure with Spurs was cut short, and he found himself shifting back and forth between the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League and a short stint with Chorale Roanne in France.

In 2015, his professional career took a steady direction as he signed a 10-day contract with the San Antonio Spurs, followed by subsequent contracts with the Memphis Grizzlies, including a multi-year one. During the 2015-2016 season, Green proved his worth by recording some career-best figures; he scored a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds in a match against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Continuing his streak of brilliance, Green secured a career-high 18 rebounds in a match against the Portland Trail Blazers in December 2016. The following year, he hit his career-high 29 points in a match against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

However, his growth was not only limited to the court; Green proved to be a promising asset off-court as well. After becoming a restricted free agent, he was re-signed with the Grizzlies on a two-year deal in 2017.

The following seasons were a mixed bag for Green. In the 2018-19 season, he spent the beginning sidelined with a broken jaw. However, he bounced back, recording some his-season highs, including 24 points in a win over the Pelicans. He was later traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in February 2019.

In November 2020, Green continued his NBA journey by signing a multi-year contract with the Denver Nuggets. The following seasons saw him traded to, and subsequently bought out by, the Oklahoma City Thunder. In August 2022, Green embarked on his stint with the Golden State Warriors.
