Jakob Pöltl’s journey to becoming a professional basketball player started on October 15, 1995, when he was born in Vienna, Austria. With both of his parents being members of the Austrian national volleyball teams, being part of the sports world was seemingly in his blood. However, it was the vicinity of a youth basketball program near their Vienna home that led his parents to steer him towards basketball.

At a young age, Pöltl joined Vienna DC Timberwolves, a youth program where he honed his skills for seven years. He later played one season (2013-14) for the Arkadia Traiskirchen Lions of the Austrian Bundesliga. But it was not until the 2013 FIBA Europe U18 Championship that Pöltl became known within the basketball community of the United States.
