BIOGRAPHY

Born on January 7, 1996, Tre’Quan Smith grew up to become an accomplished American professional football player. However, his journey started late as he only began playing football in his freshman year of high school at Village Academy High School in Delray Beach, Florida.

Having found his passion for the sport, Smith committed to playing college football at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Between 2014 and 2017, Smith impressed everyone with his performances. He successfully recorded 168 receptions for 2,748 yards and 22 touchdowns during his tenure at UCF.

After his junior season at UCF, Smith decided to enter the 2018 NFL draft. His decision was formally announced via his Twitter account on January 6, 2018. Smith rapidly drew attention on January 27, 2018, in the Senior Bowl where he scored a 14-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Mike White enabling the North to defeat the South 45–16.

Smith proved his exceptional abilities again during the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Among the best of players, he earned the third-best broad jump and the14th best time in the 40-yard dash. By this time, Smith had cemented his reputation as a formidable wide receiver.

His performances enticed NFL teams including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New York Giants, whom he had private workouts with. By the end of the pre-draft process, Smith was projected to be a third or fourth-round pick, and he was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the third round as the 91st overall pick of the 2018 NFL draft.

Smith officially became part of the Saints on May 21, 2018, signing a four-year, $3.42 million contract. Smith’s debut NFL season saw him record 28 receptions for 427 yards and five touchdowns – a crucial contribution to the Saints’ triumphant 13-3 record.

Though his second season was plagued with an ankle injury, he still managed 18 receptions for a total of 234 yards and five touchdowns. He finished the subsequent 2020 season with 34 receptions for 448 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns.

However, an unfortunate injury caused Smith to be placed on injured reserve towards the end of 2020. Despite this setback, he came back stronger in the 2021 season where he played 11 games and started six. He closed the season with a respectful tally of 32 receptions, 377 receiving yards, and three receiving touchdowns.

On March 30, 2022, Smith re-signed with the New Orleans Saints in a two-year, $6 million contract. He started six out of the 15 games he played that season and achieved 19 catches for 278 yards along with one touchdown.

September 9, 2023, saw Smith once again on injured reserve, and he was eventually released from the team on September 26. He rebounded by signing with the Denver Broncos’ practice squad on October 3, 2023. This tenure, however, was short-lived as he played only one game, recording no statistics.

Early 2024 saw Smith signing a reserve/future contract with the Detroit Lions on February 7. Unfortunately, he was placed on injured reserve by August 20.

Despite the highs and lows, Smith has remained a prominent figure in American football. Whether it was his incredible college career at UCF, his time with the Saints, or his ongoing professional football career, Smith’s journey serves as a testament to his resilience and dedication to the sport. As of now, he is a free agent, but the football industry awaits his return.
