Travin Howard's Biography

Travin Howard, born May 10, 1996, is a professional American football player who is known for his skills as a linebacker and has a promising career in the sport. Born and raised in Longview, Texas, Howard harnessed his natural affinity for sports during his high school years, becoming a star player for the Longview High School football team. Here, he started to make a name for himself in the football world as a safety, earning the prestigious District Defensive MVP award as a senior in 2013.

After demonstrating his prowess on the field, Howard received several collegiate offers, eventually committing verbally to Texas Christian University (TCU). He officially signed his national letter of intent with TCU’s Horned Frogs team on February 5, 2014. This was where his football career truly began to take off.

In his first year at TCU, Howard played minimally. Nonetheless, after just one game during his sophomore term, he was shifted to the linebacker position, quickly demonstrating his skill and dedication by leading the team in tackles in the subsequent match against Stephen F. Austin. This marked the beginning of Howard’s successful run as a linebacker. He started in the next 11 games and became the team’s top tackler for the season. His vigorous performance won him Defensive MVP honors in the triple-overtime victory against Oregon in the 2015 Alamo Bowl.

Howard developed a reputation for being a hard worker and a strong player. His name was etched in TCU’s history when he led the Horned Frogs in tackles for three consecutive seasons, the first player in the program’s history to achieve that feat. Howard was recognized as first-team All-Big 12 Conference in both his junior and senior years, and for the second time, he was named Defensive MVP in his final college game, which ended in a victory over Stanford in the 2017 Alamo Bowl.

Upon graduating, Howard was picked by the Los Angeles Rams in the seventh round (231st overall) of the 2018 NFL draft. Despite being waived by the Rams on September 1, 2018, Howard displayed persistence by returning to the team’s practice squad in the following month, October. He was signed to a reserve/future contract in February 2019.

Howard’s professional career had its ups and downs. He was placed on injured reserve in September 2020 and again in November 2021, but returned to action in December that year. Despite these setbacks, one of his major career highlights came during the 2021 NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers. Howard’s game-sealing interception in the final two minutes of the match secured a 20–17 victory that sent the Rams to Super Bowl LVI. Howard was waived and then re-signed by the Rams in June 2022 and was also placed on the reserve/non-football injury list in August 2022. However, he returned from the list in November the same year.

In May 2023, Howard made a brief move to the Buffalo Bills but was released in August that year. Howard then joined the Birmingham Stallions of the United States Football League in December 2023. However, circumstances led to his release on March 10, 2024.
