Steven Sims's Biography

Born on March 31, 1997, Steven Sims Jr. has quickly become known for his prowess on the football field. His open field speed and elusiveness make him a formidable adversary in his roles as a professional football wide receiver and punt returner. Currently, he plays for the Houston Texans, a team that is part of the National Football League (NFL).

Sims’ journey into the world of sports began in early childhood, coming to a bloom at Travis High School in Pecan Grove, Texas, where he first showcased his football abilities. He displayed his multi-faceted skills as a dynamic two-star recruit, attracting attention from several institutions. Despite receiving lucrative offers from McNeese State, Prairie View A&M, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern, and Stephen F. Austin, Sims committed himself to the University of Kansas.

At Kansas, from 2015 to 2018, Sims refined his skills further, excelling as a wide receiver, kick returner, and punt returner. The next significant step in his professional career came on April 30, 2019, when he signed with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent. He did not waste any time making his mark on the team, scoring his first career reception, a three-yard gain in a match against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2.

In that same game, Sims also scored three carries for sixteen yards, impressively stepping up on the playing field. His first foray into the end zone came in the form of a 65-yard rushing touchdown on October 6, 2019, against the renowned New England Patriots, demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure.

Sims celebrated the end of the 2019 season with 34 receptions for 310 receiving yards and four touchdowns under his belt. However, the following year was met with adversity when a knee injury halted his progress. After three games in the 2020 season, he was placed on injured reserve on October 9, 2020.

Even an injury couldn’t keep Sims out of the game for long. He returned to the field on November 7, 2020, and went on to play twelve regular season games that year. His commitment to the sport led him to record 27 receptions for 265 yards and one touchdown that season. Although the Washington Redskins released Sims in August 2021, he was quick to sign with the Buffalo Bills later that same month. However, he was released soon after as part of the Bills’ final cuts.

Undeterred, he continued his professional career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, joining their practice squad on September 1, 2021. Determined to prove himself, Sims signed a reserve/future contract with the Steelers less than five months later, on January 19, 2022.

The 2022 season saw Sims contribute to 12 games, recording 14 receptions for 104 yards and making 13 rushing attempts for 70 yards. As a testament to his resilience and versatility, he signed with the Houston Texans on March 24, 2023, only to be released in August. Yet again, the setback did not deter Sims, and he was re-signed with the Texans in March 2024.
