Cameron Sutton

Cameron Amir Sutton, renowned as a professional football player, was born on February 27, 1995. His career spans many remarkable performances and achievements, primarily noted for his tenure as a cornerback with the National Football League (NFL) team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

His early life witnessed his schooling in Jonesboro High School, Georgia, where he actively participated in multiple sports. Football, however, remained his primary focus, where Sutton proved his prowess as a cornerback and wide receiver. He acquired 1,396 all-purpose yards and garnered 19 touchdowns during his senior year. Concurrently, he participated in basketball and baseball as well. These impressive attributes earned Sutton a three-star recruit rating from Rivals.com.

Sutton’s dedication to football led him to the University of Tennessee, where he played under the guidance of head coach Butch Jones from 2013 to 2016. As a true freshman in 2013, Sutton showed a knack for the sport, recording 39 tackles, two interceptions, one sack, and a touchdown. His knack continued, earning consistent successes in subsequent years; such as his special teams roles with one interception and two forced fumbles during 2015.

Sutton’s NFL career began when the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted him in the third round of the 2017 draft. His performance in the Senior Bowl had attracted many scouts because of his versatility in playing safety and cornerback positions. ESPN and NFLDraftScout.com deemed Sutton as the 15th best cornerback in the draft.

Sutton’s professional league journey made a rocky start in his rookie season, primarily due to injury. He initially competed with William Gay, Coty Sensabaugh, and Mike Hilton for the backup cornerback position. However, an aggravated hamstring injury in the final pre-season game against the Carolina Panthers pushed Sutton into the injured reserve on September 4, 2017.

After recovering, Sutton made a stunning debut against the Cincinnati Bengals on December 4, deflecting a pass and holding Green to no catches. This impressive performance helped the Steelers overcome a 17-point deficit, ultimately winning 23–20.

In subsequent years, Sutton’s game improved massively with impressive defensive tactics and interceptions. His 2018 season ended with 22 total tackles, one interception and three passes defended, and one forced fumble. The 2019 season recorded another 16 total tackles, one interception, and five passes defended.

Sutton’s 2020 season marked his first interception of the season off a pass thrown by Baker Mayfield during the 38–7 win against the Browns. He ended the year with 30 total tackles, an interception, eight passes defended, and three forced fumbles.

Keeping up with his skills, Sutton signed a two-year, $9 million contract with his alma mater, the Steelers, in March 2021. He successfully completed that season with 52 total tackles and two interceptions.

The following year, he had 43 total tackles and three interceptions, impressively managing to defend against 15 passes. On March 16, 2023, Sutton signed an exciting three-year, $33 million contract with the Detroit Lions. Here he commenced 17 regular season games and three postseason games, adding 65 total tackles, an interception and six passes defended to his career tally.

However, 2024 plummeted into a downfall consequent to an arrest warrant issued for Sutton in relation to a domestic abuse allegation. Subsequently, the Lions cut Sutton off their team. In response, Sutton returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers in June 2024 with a one-year contract. However, provoking further controversy, the leagues designated an eight-game suspension for Sutton due to violating the personal conduct policy.

In March 2024, Sutton was charged with misdemeanor battery following a domestic violence incident. Nevertheless, he received an opportunity for rectification and joined a pretrial diversion program, a batterers’ intervention program, following his voluntary submission in April 2024.
