Stanley Morgan's Biography

Stanley Morgan, known for his exceptional talent in American football, started his life on February 17, 1955. Over the decades that followed his birth, he established himself as a formidable NFL professional player renowned for his tenacity and skill. Morgan began his journey to NFL fame by showcasing his talents in high school football at Easley High School, South Carolina. His team’s state championship triumph in 1972 stands as a testimony to his extraordinary potential early in his career.

College life presented Morgan with a unique opportunity to further his skills at the University of Tennessee. As a freshman, he stood out as a wide receiver, an inherent testament to his versatility during his college career. His impressive performance not only solidified his position in the team but also set the stage for a stellar run in his sophomore year. His knack for breaking records began in earnest this year, scoring an SEC-leading 84 points. Followed by another achievement as the first volunteer to rush for 200 yards in a game against Hawaii.

By his senior year, Morgan had proven himself as a multi-faceted player, finishing second in rushing and receiving on the team. His 11 touchdowns for the season earned him the 1976 All-SEC honors as both a running back and receiver. Eventually, his all-purpose yards record for the University of Tennessee, a remarkable 4,642, stands unopposed, earning him an induction into the University of Tennessee Hall of Fame in 2000.

In 1977, Morgan was selected by the New England Patriots to play in the NFL. Despite his experience as a running back, his speed enabled a seamless transition back to a wide receiver. His rookie season saw him record 21 receptions for 443 yards and three touchdowns. Morgan’s record-breaking pattern continued as he led the NFL in yards per reception in 1979, 1980, and 1981. His NFL career with the New England Patriots saw three personal best seasons for yards per reception.

Stanley Morgan went through his career displaying consistent skills and determination. He led the NFL in 1979 with a then-franchise record of 12 receiving touchdowns. He also led the Patriots to the AFC East title in 1986, earning recognition at the Pro Bowls such years as 1979, 1980, 1986, and 1987. The honor did not stop there; Morgan was also selected 2nd Team All-Pro in 1980 and 1986.

Despite his team’s loss in Super Bowl XX to the Chicago Bears, Morgan was undaunted. He played a significant role, catching six passes for 51 yards. His career with the Patriots ended after 13 years, after which he signed with the Indianapolis, where he played just one season. His time with the Colts was impressive, given that he recorded 23 receptions for 364 yards and five touchdowns. He finished his NFL career comfortably within the top 100 in all four of NFL’s categories, with total receptions of 557 for 10,716 yards and 72 touchdowns.

After his retirement, Morgan was inducted into the New England Patriots Hall of Fame in 2007, an acknowledgement of his massive contributions to the game. His absence from the Pro Football Hall of Fame despite his incredible performance throughout his career, like his contemporaries, is an intriguing fact.

Beyond his playing career, Morgan also help groom upcoming talents as a wide receivers coach for the XFL’s Memphis Maniax. He has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the sport of American football, and his achievements will forever remain an inspiration to future generations.
