Shawn Bowman's Biography

Shawn Douglas Bain Bowman, born on December 9, 1984, is a celebrated figure in the professional baseball community, having served as a successful third baseman during his athletic career and subsequently transitioning into the role of a distinguished coach. A Canadian national, he was educated at Dr. Charles Best Secondary School in Coquitlam, British Columbia, and it was during these formative years that Bowman started nurturing his passion for baseball and honing his skills for the sport.

Bowman secured his position as the starting third baseman for the Coquitlam Reds of the B.C. Premier Baseball League, demonstrating his prowess on the field. His athletic capabilities extended beyond his role with the Reds, and in 2002 he ventured onto the international stage, representing Team Canada as a shortstop at the World Junior Baseball Championship. Bowman was exceptional during the tournament, scoring 12 runs batted in within five games, and consequently, he was designated as a member of the tournament All-Star Team, solidifying his position as an upcoming talent in the world of baseball.

In the 2002 Major League Baseball draft, Bowman was picked by the Mets in the 12th round (357th overall), but the ensuing negotiations did not fructify in time and subsequently, his debut professional season was postponed. Eventually, his professional career was kick-started in mid-2003, with Bowman seeing action with both the Kingsport Mets and the Brooklyn Cyclones, affiliating him with the major leagues.

Come 2004, Bowman was showcasing his talent with the Capital City Bombers. The season proved to be quite a highlight in his early career as he staked his claim as an able third baseman in the league. He recorded a batting average of .258, achieving the remarkable feat of hit 19 home runs and tallying 69 RBIs in 116 games, demonstrating his potency and dependability as a player.

However, Bowman’s professional journey was not devoid of hurdles. During the 2005 season, while playing with the St. Lucie Mets of the Florida State League, he was beset with chronic back problems. These health issues interrupted his career, confining him to only 125 games spread over the subsequent three seasons.

In June 2008, Bowman made his return to the St. Lucie lineup, fully recuperated from his back ailment. He excelled in his performance, boasting a batting average of .340 over the ensuing 26 games. His stellar performance earned him a well-deserved promotion to the AA Binghamton Mets. Although he kicked off his Binghamton career with an 8-game hitting streak, by the end of the 2008 season his average had declined to .214 over his final 84 at-bats.

Despite the setback, Bowman’s contribution to Canadian baseball was far from over. In 2009, he was included in Canada’s roster for the prestigious World Baseball Classic. Unfortunately, he did not get the chance to showcase his skills during any of the team’s games.

Another significant career move for Bowman came on April 14, 2010, when he was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays. This marked the advent of a fruitful new chapter in his professional baseball career.

Having retired from his playing career, Bowman transitioned into management, bringing his vast experience and knowledge of the game to the table. On January 18, 2019, he took on the role of the manager for the Dominican Summer League Pirates 2, thus embarking on the next stage of his illustrious career in baseball.
