Arik Armstead

Arik Armstead, born on November 15, 1993, is an accomplished American professional football player. Armstead spent his early years in Elk Grove, California. He attended Pleasant Grove High School, where he demonstrated his talent in football and amassed impressive statistics, including 126 tackles and 7.5 sacks. These achievements earned him the status of being a four-star recruit by Rivals.com and the sixth-best defensive end in his class. Despite initially committing to the University of Southern California for his college football career, Armstead decided to attend the University of Oregon instead.

In addition to football, Armstead was fond of playing basketball during his high school years. This athletic diversity would continue into his college career, as Armstead joined the Ducks basketball team during his first and second years. However, as his focus shifted more profoundly toward football, he left the basketball team after playing one game in his sophomore year.

Armstead burst into the NFL scene when he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft. His rookie season was a solid start, as he finished with 19 combined tackles and two sacks. Unfortunately, Armstead suffered a string of injuries over the 2016 and 2017 seasons, which impacted his game time and performance. Despite these setbacks, he continued to work on improving his game.

In 2019, Armstead demonstrated his deftness on the field, marking a breakout season. It was a year of personal highs where he recorded 54 tackles, resulted in two forced fumbles, and recovered a fumble. This earned him second place on the 49ers in terms of tackles for loss. Armstead’s performance significantly contributed to the 49ers making it to Super Bowl LIV, albeit they lost to the Chiefs.

Armstead’s dedication to the team was rewarded when the 49ers extended his contract by five years for $85 million, with $48.5 million guaranteed. However, the following season was challenging as Armstead was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Despite this, he managed to start in all 16 games.

His determination and perseverance were recognized when the 49ers nominated him for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award in 2021. Armstead ended the season by helping the 49ers secure a place in the playoffs with his 2.5 sacks against the Rams.

Armstead’s career took an unexpected turn in season 2023. He suffered a knee injury during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles but, in spite of this, played through the injury during the playoffs, ultimately leading to a torn meniscus requiring surgery. The forthcoming off-season would largely be spent in recovery. In March of 2024, Armstead left the 49ers and subsequently signed a three-year, $51 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Beyond his professional career, Armstead is a devout Christian. He is married to Melinda, and they are proud parents to two daughters. His brother, Armond Armstead, had also pursued a career in football, playing at USC and the Canadian Football League. Off the field, Arik was a participant in Chess.com’s BlitzChamps, a fast-paced tournament for NFL players. Although he finished last, the consolation prize was equally split among the participant’s chosen charities. Despite the rigorous demands of his professional career, Armstead juggled his personal interests along with his dedication to the community, truly embodying the spirit of a well-rounded individual.
