Ryan Timothy Tannehill III was born on July 27, 1988, in Lubbock, Texas, and grew up in Big Spring, a neighboring city. As a child, he indulged in multiple sports with a particular inclination towards football, basketball, and track and field. His strong desire for sports led him to a successful career path illuminating in the world of American professional football. He attended Big Spring High School, exhibiting prodigious talent in his erstwhile years on the football field.

In his high school years, Tannehill displayed exceptional skills as a defensive back in his sophomore season, and as a quarterback in his junior year, amassing an impressive performance of 2,510 yards passing and 922 yards rushing. His senior year witnessed a remarkable journey to the playoffs, with 1,258 passing yards and 617 rushing yards, despite missing two games due to a shoulder injury. He personally topped it off with three receptions for 62 yards, and a 39.2 punt average with a long of 84 yards. His persistent displays of talent earned him second-team District 4-4A honors.

Post high school, Tannehill showcased his expertise at hurdling and jumping events in track and field, earning third place at the 300 m hurdles and second place in the triple jump event at the 2006 District 4-4A championships. Subsequently, he entered Texas A&M in 2007, turning down lucrative offers from universities like Houston, TCU, Tulsa, and UTEP. He redshirted his first season at Texas A&M, primarily playing the wide receiver position in the following seasons.

Tannehill’s college years witnessed a transition from playing as a wide receiver to serving as the starting quarterback. His performances throughout his college career led him to recognition and the opportunity to play in the NFL where he was selected eighth overall by the Miami Dolphins in the 2012 NFL draft.
