Robert Spillane, born on December 14, 1995, is a celebrated American professional football player who has shown his mettle as a linebacker for several teams in the National Football League (NFL). Currently, he is carving his niche in the Las Vegas Raiders team. Born and raised in Oak Park, Illinois, Spillane’s athletic endeavours began to manifest at an early age. He went to Fenwick High School, where he joined the school’s football team and was known for his impressive dual role as both a running back and a linebacker. Rated a three-star recruit by various recruiting services, he began his college football career primarily as a running back at Western Michigan.

Spillane contributed significantly as a player during his four-year stint with the Western Michigan Broncos, participating in 47 games. He amassed a remarkable tally of 312 tackles, and a variety of other formidable stat lines. Spillane’s fantastic performance during his junior season earned him a place in the All-Mid American Conference (MAC) second-team.

After an impressive college run, Spillane set his sights on the NFL. Despite being undrafted, he signed with the Tennessee Titans as a free agent in May 2018. 2019 saw Spillane in the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite a few administrative hiccups, he rallied back each time, reaching the active roster by November and ending the season with 11 tackles in a span of eight games. His defining moment came in 2020 when a torn ACL benched the Steelers’ starting inside linebacker, Devin Bush Jr. Asserting his chance to rise, Spillane stepped in as the starter for the remaining season and made a statement with performance feats, including intercepting a pass and turning it into a touchdown, managing team-high 11 tackles and a fumble recovery, among others.

Despite landing on the injured reserve list in December 2020, Spillane was activated again in January 2021. The season ended on a solid note for him with two sacks, 45 total tackles, one interception, and four passes defended. 2021 was another opportunity for laser-focused performance with 56 total tackles in 14 games. In 2022, his ascension continued with one sack, 79 total tackles, and four passes defended in 16 matches.

Spillane’s skills spurred the Steelers to place a restricted free agent tender on him in March of 2022. Seeking new challenges and experiences, Spillane signed a two-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders in March 2023. He quickly proved to be a stellar addition to the team’s defence, earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week in week 10.
