Pete Werner, who took his first breath in the world on June 5, 1999, is a remarkable American linebacker demonstrating his professional skills on the football field. Being a part of the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL) arms him with confidence and an indomitable spirit. His formative years in the sport began with his college football career at Ohio State, where his incredible talent was sufficiently noticed to earn him selection by the Saints in their second round during the 2021 NFL draft.

Born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, Werner attended Cathedral High School where his love for football sparked and started to take shape. Having had a promising junior year, he found himself in a favourable position with offers from a variety of esteemed colleges, including renowned names like Duke, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Wisconsin. Having evaluated the various options before him, Werner initially committed to play at Notre Dame.

During his senior year, Werner demonstrated his proficiency on the field, recording 64 tackles, with 17 tackles for loss and eight sacks. His growing prowess led him to get named Class 6A All-State. However, as the season progressed, Werner had a change of heart and de-committed from Notre Dame. In a change of events, he reopened his recruitment, eventually deciding to march ahead with Ohio State.

Werner’s first year in college saw him record nine tackles as a true freshman – an early indicator of his talent and potential. His sophomore year featured incredible performances with him registering 58 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss, and forced two fumbles. The shining trajectory of his football career took another impressive leap during his junior year. Werner successfully recorded 64 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, two fumbles recovered, and managed to break up three passes. This series of achievements, led him to be named an honorable mention All-Big Ten Conference – a clear testament to his outstanding performance and potential.

2021 witnessed a pivotal turn in Werner’s career when he was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the second round, 60th overall during the NFL draft. This marked his transition from a college linebacker to a professional one – a milestone moment in his life. He then signed his first four-year rookie contract with New Orleans on June 8, 2021. As he familiarised himself with the dynamics of the professional league, Werner and the Saints agreed to a three-year $25 million contract extension on August 8, 2024.

Pete Werner’s dedication and determination towards football can also be traced in his lineage. His father, Greg Werner, was a prominent name in the sport, having played college football at DePauw University and enjoyed two seasons in the NFL with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles. His older brother, Dan Werner, also shares the football legacy, having played his college football at Harvard.
