Payton Turner's Biography
Born on the 7th of January, 1999, Payton Turner is a dynamic force within the American professional football scene. Serving as a defensive end for the revered New Orleans Saints, his prowess on the field has become an integral asset to this esteemed team within the National Football League (NFL).
Turner’s journey to the NFL commenced in college, where he diligently honed his craft playing college football at the University of Houston. A track record of consistent performance and exceptional talent caught the eye of the New Orleans Saints, who selected him in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft, marking the commencement of his professional football career.
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Payton Turner’s passion for sport was evident from an early age. He attended Westside High School, where he split his time between his two favourite sports; basketball and football. Even then, his natural ability was clear for all to see.
Upon joining the Houston Cougars, a top-tier football program at the University of Houston, Turner’s potential bloomed. He was part of the team’s robust defensive line-up for four seasons, starting in the last three years. Turner demonstrated remarkable promise in his freshman year, contributing to the Cougars’ pass rush rotation and concluding the season boasting 14 tackles, one sack, and one interception.
His sophomore season, however, was cut short due to a foot injury. Despite the setback, Turner came back stronger in his senior year. His tenacious spirit marked an impressive season where he was named second team All-American Athletic Conference following his record of 25 tackles, 5 sacks and 10.5 for a loss in merely five games played. Unfortunately, he missed two games due to injury but made the personal decision to opt out of the New Mexico Bowl to preserve his health.
Following his strong college football career, Turner was invited to showcase his skills in the 2021 Senior Bowl. This participation came before the New Orleans Saints drafted him as the 28th overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft. He subsequently signed a four-year rookie contract with New Orleans on the 8th of June, 2021.
Just when his NFL career was taking off, Turner faced several injuries. A shoulder injury led to his placement on injured reserve on November 11, 2021. Then, in a season opener against the Tennessee Titans on September 13, 2023, Turner suffered a turf toe injury once again landing him on injured reserve.
However, the injury did not diminish Turner’s spirit, as he proved his mettle yet again by returning to the field. Payton Turner was activated for duty on January 5, 2024, thus persisting in his journey as an NFL defensive end. His courage to overcome injuries and commitment to the sport are testaments to the indomitable spirit of this promising player.
