Patrick Allen Jones II, known to his friends as Patrick, was born on September 29, 1998, in the unusual setting of a U.S. military base in Yokosuka, Japan. Despite being born overseas, Jones considers Chesapeake, Virginia home, as he spent the majority of his early life there. Virginia is where his football journey began, with Grassfield High School serving as his gridiron proving grounds. During his senior year at Grassfield, Jones showcased his colossal talent, recording 83 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and 8.5 sacks. His talent did not go unrecognized, and Jones was named to the All-Tidewater team.

As Jones graduated from high school, he found himself with a multitude of offers to continue his football career at the collegiate level. Despite tempting opportunities from powerhouse programs such as Virginia Tech, California, Duke, Illinois, and NC State, Jones committed to play for the Panthers at the University of Pittsburgh. Aiming to maximize his collegiate experience, Jones chose to enroll at Pittsburgh a semester early and redshirt his true freshman season. This lead-up period served him well.

As a redshirt freshman, Jones made seven tackles and recorded a half of a sack. Progress was visible. The next year saw him entering the defensive line rotation as a redshirt sophomore. That season, he finished with an impressive 23 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, and a forced fumble. Then, as a redshirt junior, Jones got his golden opportunity: he was selected as a starter. Jones seized this chance, making a substantial impact on the field. Recording 43 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and 18 quarterback hurries, Jones was named second team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Jones’ redshirt senior year established him as one of the top prospects at his position for the 2021 NFL Draft. His recognition in the Chuck Bednarik Award, Ted Hendricks Award, and Bronko Nagurski Trophy watchlists further highlighted his rising status. During the third week of the season, Jones’ performance against Louisville – notching up six tackles with three sacks and three tackles for loss in a 23-20 win – saw him named as both the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week and the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week. The following week, echoing his success, Jones put in a similarly remarkable three-sack performance against Boston College. He finished his senior year with 44 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, nine sacks, and a fumble recovery.

Then came the moment that all young football players dream of: the NFL Draft. In the third round (90th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft, Jones was selected by the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings had secured this third-round selection following their trade of defensive end Yannick Ngakoue to the Baltimore Ravens.
