Patrick John Freiermuth was born on October 25, 1998, and grew up in Merrimac, Massachusetts. From an early age, sports played a significant role in his life, inspired not only by his surroundings but also by his athletically gifted family. His father, John Freiermuth, was a renowned basketball player who was crowned as New Hampshire’s “Mr. Basketball” in 1988. Patrick’s mother is a former high school field hockey coach and his uncle, Michael Foley, has had a successful career as a football coach. Drawing from his early exposure to sports, Patrick developed an inherent interest in football.

Patrick’s high school years were split between Pentucket Regional High School in West Newbury, Massachusetts, and later, Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts. Here, he exhibited his remarkable athletic ability, playing as a tight end and outside linebacker for the school’s football team and taking up dual roles in the basketball team. He had a successful high school career, acquiring 1,531 total yards and 24 total touchdowns over his years of play.

After his successful stint at high school, Patrick committed to Penn State to further his football career. His time at Penn State was outstanding and transformative. As a freshman, he broke the record for the most receiving touchdowns by a freshman tight end. Throughout his college years, Patrick kept up this performance and even declined an early invitation to the NFL Draft Combine because he wanted to recommit to Penn State. During his tenure with the Nittany Lions, he made remarkable achievements, including being voted the Most Valuable Offensive Player in 2019 and being named the Big Ten Conference’s Kwalick–Clark Tight End of the Year in 2020.

Patrick’s dream of playing on an even bigger stage came to fruition when he was selected in the second round (55th overall) of the 2021 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He started his journey in the NFL as the replacement for Vance McDonald, who retired after the 2020 season. In the same year, Patrick signed a four-year rookie contract with the club, marking the beginning of his professional career. His NFL debut came in Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills, where he recorded his first career reception and went on to have a promising rookie season.

Freiermuth’s first taste of postseason action came on January 16, 2022, against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Wildcard round. Despite the pressure of the moment, he performed admirably, making four receptions on five targets for 25 yards. His performance and similar playing style to former Pittsburgh Steeler Heath Miller saw the home crowd adopt a chant of ‘Muth’ in acknowledgment of his significant contributions.

In the 2022 season, he continued to show promising performances, starting in eight of the sixteen regular-season games where he caught 63 passes for 732 yards, the most of his professional career to date, scoring two touchdowns across all 16 games. During the season, he also steered the team to victories with his exceptional skills against teams like the Cincinnati Bengals and the New England Patriots.

Unfortunately, the journey through his professional career has not been without its challenges. He has battled health issues, having been placed on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury in 2023. Despite this setback, he made a strong comeback, performing very well in games against the Cincinnati Bengals, after his recovery from injury.

The 2023 season wrapped up with Patrick making 32 catches on 47 targets for 308 yards and scoring two touchdowns, playing in 12 games and starting nine of them. Despite a postseason loss against the Buffalo Bills, Patrick’s potential and promise shone through, leaving a lasting mark on the Steelers, their opponents and the league.

Off the field, Patrick’s mother continues to influence his life. A retired history teacher, she has served as the president of the Penn State Football Parents Association, a role that, undoubtedly, brought her closer to his football journey. His elder brother, Tim Freiermuth, an offensive lineman for Springfield College in Massachusetts, is a constant inspiration in his career.

Raised in a family dedicated to sports and fortitude, Patrick Freiermuth has mirrored these traits and continues to make his name known in the world of professional football. As of 2024, he has shown immense promise in his career and, at a young age, he shows no signs of stopping, always striving for improvement and success on the gridiron.
