Allen took an unconventional route to major college football, spending the 2014 season at Reedley College before joining Wyoming in 2015. He played three seasons for the Cowboys and earned a communications degree from the University of Wyoming.

Buffalo traded up to select Allen with the seventh overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
