Jake Luton's Biography

Jake Luton, a professional American football quarterback, was born in Marysville, Washington, on April 11, 1996. He gained recognition playing for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL). Prior to this, he had an impressive run with the Jacksonville Jaguars, selected by the team in the 2020 NFL draft’s sixth round.

Developed through the influence of his hometown, Jake spent his formative athletics years leaning into the dual-sports lane, playing both baseball and football at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. After graduating in 2014, his preeminent skills as a two-star recruit led him to commit to the University of Idaho, situated in Moscow. At the time of his commitment, the school was a part of the Football Bowl Subdivision program in the Sun Belt Conference, coached by Paul Petrino during his second year.

While at the University of Idaho, Jake navigated his freshman year as a redshirt in 2014. The successive year saw him participating in eight games, throwing for a total of 408 yards, and rushing an impressive five touchdowns. His time at Idaho concluded with an announcement of his departure in June 2016.

Subsequently, Jake transferred to Ventura College in Southern California for his redshirt sophomore season in 2016. His efforts throughout the eleven games resulted in an impressive throw of 3,551 yards and forty touchdowns. Further deepening his commitment to the sport, he joined Oregon State University in Corvallis, led by Gary Anderson, where he secured the starting quarterback position in 2017. However, fate ruled otherwise; an unfortunate back injury concluded his debut season after just four games. Nonetheless, Jake’s determination remained unfazed. In 2018, during his fifth-year senior season, he was granted a sixth year of eligibility which he utilized well by starting eleven games in 2019, showcasing his skill by throwing 28 touchdowns with just three interceptions.

With this impeccable record, Luton was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2020 NFL draft. He made his first career start in Week 9 against the Houston Texans due to the absence of first-string quarterback, Gardner Minshew. Although the Jaguars lost, Jake completed 26 of 38 passes for 304 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and made a stunning 13-yard rushing score. Despite showing great promise, his performance dipped in consecutive games, leading to his replacement by Mike Glennon.

On August 31, 2021, Luton was waived during the final roster cut. However, he soon found an opportunity with the Seattle Seahawks. Despite the subsequent series of waivers and re-signing to the practice squad, followed by another release due to the signing of Jacob Eason, Luton again found the opportunity to continue his career in the professional football league.

Luton’s journey saw him signing with the Miami Dolphins practice squad and subsequently getting a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Yet, he was again waived, re-signed, and waived again by the Jaguars and found himself playing with the New Orleans Saints. His time with the Saints echoed his previous experiences of being waived, re-signed and then once again, waived.

On May 2, 2023, he was once again waived, this time by the Saints, and then on July 29, 2023, he found himself signed with the Carolina Panthers. He continually battled against waivers and releases, only to find himself back in the Saints’ practice squad. However, his stint with the Saints came to an end due to the return of another quarterback, but he was soon back with the Panthers’ practice squad.

Upon his release in November, Luton was re-signed, only to get released again. This was followed by another signing with the Panthers on August 5, 2024, but his journey was abruptly halted when he was placed on injured reserve and released following an injury settlement two weeks later. This marked the end of an impressive journey that spanned various teams and a series of waivers and signings.
