Geoff Swaim, born on September 16, 1993, is an essential figure in the world of professional football. Currently, he stands as a tight end for the Cleveland Browns in the National Football League (NFL). Before his venture into the NFL, Swaim showcased his talents at both the collegiate and high school levels.

High School and College Football Career

Hailing from Pleasant Valley High School, Swaim displayed his athletic prowess as a football player. Playing as a linebacker, he achieved All-section and All-league honors in his senior year. Swaim was credited with 124 tackles, six sacks, a successful interception, fumble recovery and two blocked extra points. This whirlwind performance was not his sole athletic endeavor, however. Swaim also showed his versatility, participating in basketball alongside football.

Following his successful high school career, Swaim attended Butte College, where he transitioned into a tight end position. As a two-year starter, he was instrumental in aiding his team in securing back-to-back bowls and the triumph of the 2012 Nor Cal Conference Championship. Swaim was then transferred to the University of Texas, where he was again a consistent fixture on the field as a two-year starter. His role in Texas was primarily that of a blocking tight end and a special team player. He completed 22 starts out of 26 games, leaving his mark with 13 receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Entry into NFL and Dallas Cowboys Tenure

Swaim’s journey in the NFL began in 2015 when he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round. His selection followed a strategic move by the Dallas Cowboys who traded their sixth-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft to the San Francisco 49ers, to ensure Swaim’s recruitment. His competence saw him become the 17th tight end to be drafted in 2015.

He built an impressive reputation in preseason games, compelling the team to go against their norm and retain four tight ends. Despite his mixed rookie year, where he was declared inactive for 12 games and only played in four, Swaim exhibited his determination. His resilience became more distinct in the face of injuries to teammates, which afforded him the opportunity to play in the last two games, recording one reception for no yards.

The trials of Swaim’s professional career became evident in his second year. After the season-starting opener against the New York Giants, he was placed on injured reserve due to a pectoral injury in the ninth game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He finished his second season with six receptions for 69 yards in nine games and six starts.

Overcoming several injuries, including a foot fracture, knee injury, and wrist break, Swaim stepped into the bigger role due to sudden retirements of his teammates. He entered as the Cowboys’ starting tight end, recording career-high statistics along the way and cemented his place as a reliable player despite his injury setbacks.

Stints with Other Teams, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans

In 2019, Swaim signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, his stint with the Jaguars was marked with adversities, and he was eventually released by the Jaguars in 2020 after struggling with an ankle injury and concussion.

He then signed with the Tennessee Titans in August 2020, competing for the role of blocking tight end. His journey with the Titans saw some wrestling with COVID-19 outbreaks within the team, injuries, and extensive game time. He signed an extension with the Titans in 2021 following a strong performance and has had career-high receives and touchdowns in the 2021 season.

In 2022, he inked a one-year contract extension with the Titans. Despite scoring only one touchdown for the season, his role in blocking made him integral to the team’s performance, affirming his position as a consistent performer.

Injury and Sidelines

Swaim’s tenure with the Arizona Cardinals in July 2023 was short-lived. During a match against the San Francisco 49ers, Swaim sustained a calf injury that led to him being carted off the field. Consequently, he was placed on injured reserve. Even though he accumulated 10 receptions for 94 yards in 14 games, his injury led to a premature end to his season.

Brief unemployment and the Browns

Following his tenure with the Cardinals, Swaim found himself unsigned in the offseason, even after a tryout with the New Orleans Saints. However, he was soon added to the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad on September 11, 2024.

Personal Life

Apart from Swaim’s professional accomplishments, his personal life also merits mention. His brother, Mycal Swaim, is an athlete as well and was part of the preseason roster for Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014.
