BIOGRAPHY

David Sills V, born May 29, 1996, is a professional American football player known for his phenomenal skills and exceptional sportsmanship. He currently plays as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) for the New York Giants.

Sills was born in Wilmington, Delaware, to parents David Sills IV and Denise Sills. His passion for sports, particularly football, was evident from an early age, and he started playing flag football when he was just six years old. At age 13, young Sills received a scholarship offer to play college football for the University of Southern California (USC) under then-head coach Lane Kiffin. The offer made him the youngest person ever to receive a college football scholarship offer, generating national headlines.

He attended Eastern Christian Academy, a school that is known more for producing football talents than its academics. Before the USC scholarship, he was trained under his father’s tutelage in their 50-yard field backyard. The elder Sills, a real estate developer, turned his business into building a platform for David to succeed in his football dreams.

Despite his early commitment to USC, Sills ultimately decided to attend West Virginia University, partly because of the coaching changes at USC. Due to injuries to other quarterbacks, Sills played at that position in a couple of games during his freshman year. However, his career as a quarterback ended when he was not featured in the list of quarterbacks in the spring practice for the following year.

He then transferred to El Camino College in 2016 in order to have more playing time as a quarterback, rather than sitting out a year due to NCAA transfer rules. But after leading the team to a 7-4 record and finishing the season with 1,636 passing yards, 15 touchdown passes, and seven interceptions, Sills announced in December 2016 that he would return to West Virginia, but this time as a wide receiver.

David’s decision was a turning point of his career as he emerged as one of West Virginia’s top wide receivers in his first season in that role in 2017. During that season, he led the nation in receiving touchdowns (18), which tied for the fourth-most in a season in Big 12 history. Furthermore, he finished third in the Big 12 in receiving yards (980) and received first-team All-Big 12 honors from the league’s coaches and ESPN.

He continued his impressive performance in 2018 with 65 receptions for 986 yards and a repeat leadership in the Big 12 with 15 receiving touchdowns. David’s hard work and dedication got him a place in the list of consensus All-Americans, becoming the third wide receiver in West Virginia University history to earn this honor.

Despite his extraordinary performance in college, Sills was not selected in the 2019 NFL Draft. Even so, he was later signed by the Buffalo Bills as a free agent. Sills had a lot to prove entering the league given that he was not selected in the draft. He was waived by the Bills before the start of the regular season but was quickly signed to the team’s practice squad. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Bills in December 2019 but was waived in August 2020.

The New York Giants claimed him off waivers in September 2020 and assigned him to their practice squad, where he was activated for one game before returning to the practice squad. Despite the numerous setbacks, Sills’ relentless determination and impressive skills have ensured his place on the field.

Off the field, David is known for his disciplined nature and relentless determination. He’s a true believer in “hard work pays off,” and time and again, he has proved it right by overcoming numerous challenges throughout his career. Despite having his dreams questioned or outright denied several times, Sills has shown he has a gift for perseverance and an uncommon ability to take rejection in stride.

David is not just an excellent player but also an exemplary person. He’s humble about his success and continues to work extremely hard to improve his skills. His story of resilience serves as an inspiration to many young people who dream of making it big in the world of sports.

From a promising child athlete offered a college scholarship at an unprecedented age, to a versatile quarterback turned wide receiver, and now a professional athlete who’s making his name in the NFL, Sills embodies the spirit of determination and unyielding hard work. His journey serves as a testament of grit, hard work, and perseverance in the competitive and challenging world of professional football.
