David Montgomery is an NFL running back for the Houston Texans as of September 14, 2026. Listed at 5 feet 11 inches and 230 pounds, he played college football at Iowa State before entering the league as a third-round selection, No. 73 overall, by the Chicago Bears in the 2019 NFL Draft. NFL scouting evaluations described him as a versatile three-down back with balance, body control, stop-start quickness and receiving ability out of the backfield.
Montgomery began his professional career with Chicago and later joined the Detroit Lions in 2023. During his Lions tenure, he became known as a physical, dependable runner who could contribute near the goal line, help sustain drives and provide value as a receiver. Detroit traded him to Houston on March 11, 2026, in a deal involving offensive lineman Juice Scruggs and future draft selections. The Texans currently list Montgomery on their active roster, where he continues to provide veteran experience and a power-oriented presence in the backfield.
